Gatewood Group Campground Introduce
Visitors appreciate the beautiful setting with opportunities for stargazing right from their campsite. The nearby Seneca Creek Trail offers scenic hikes through picturesque landscapes, while sightings of local wildlife like coyotes, bobcats, and deer add to the adventure.
Guests note that while the location is isolated and peaceful, it requires attention to Leave No Trace principles. Some visitors have encountered fly issues, emphasizing the need for waste disposal and cleanliness. Additionally, the single campfire ring means groups should plan accordingly, especially during peak times.
Driving tips include caution on the one-lane mountain road leading to the site, suggesting careful driving, particularly for smaller vehicles. Overall, Gatewood Group Campground is a charming spot for those seeking an authentic outdoor experience with minimal amenities and a focus on nature.

One of the people that stayed before us threw pork chops at the edge of the woods which my dogs got and ended up getting sick from & they threw up a few times. Thankfully that's all that happened! We threw them away of course but it attracted many flies. I'm not sure if it's always like that or just because people dumped their leftover dinner in the woods. Tsk tsk. The campsite itself is beautiful! You don't even need to go to the field to star gaze. The field is actually a wildlife management area. No camping in it. The grass was about knee high so we didn't walk thru it. The grass around the campsite was mowed. We heard coyotes at night & saw a bobcat down the road from the site. Lots of deer are in the area as well. There are 8 picnic tables. 3 are around the campfire ring. There is only *one campfire ring*. No other fires are permitted. The 2 vault toilets are pretty clean & have toilet paper & hand sanitizer in them. There are quite a few trails around the campsite. We walked Seneca creek trail & it was beautiful! It turns into a one lane mountain road on the way to the campsite so be mindful of that. We had no problem getting over for passing cars. The drive wasn't too bad. We're driving a GMC Acadia FWD. The road to the campsite is probably the worst of it but still wasn't too bad. Be careful if you are driving a smaller vehicle though. It looks like they try to keep the roads well maintained. The only real complaints I have are: 1. The flies were awful. Just everywhere. 2. There is only ONE campfire ring so if you're in a group & you all plan on cooking over the fire it may take some time as you'll have to take turns. 3. Absolutely need to put in tent pads. 4. Leave No Trace! We did find garbage around the campsite along with the pork chops.
The site has enough space for about 20 people. There is a field close by the camp site for star gazing. It is kinda isolated so don't expect a lot of amenties. Two pit toilet.
We love camping here, great place to enjoy the family. Thank you. 😀
