Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland Introduce

Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland, located in Houston, Minnesota, offers a truly distinctive and immersive camping experience that beautifully blends agritourism with secluded woodland retreats. As a unique entry within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, this property provides more than just a place to set up camp; it invites guests to connect with a working pasture-based dairy farm while enjoying the tranquility and natural beauty of over 100 acres of private woodland. It stands as an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet escape, opportunities for outdoor recreation, and a glimpse into farm life.

The environment at Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland is characterized by its diverse and picturesque landscape. The property is situated in Minnesota's bluff country, a region known for its rolling hills, fertile farmland, and stunning natural beauty. Guests can experience the unique blend of open pastureland, where dairy cattle graze, transitioning into dense, old-growth maple and mixed hardwood forests. This creates a rich ecological tapestry, offering a variety of woodland habitats that are home to abundant wildlife, including woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons, and squirrels. The campsites are strategically placed for seclusion, ensuring a quiet and private experience for visitors. For instance, the "Rock Bottom Cabin" is nestled in a hardwood forest setting, emphasizing its remote feel. Similarly, the "Wooden Tent" and "Hilltop Queen" campsites are ideal for those seeking a quiet woodland setting. The winding trails that crisscross the 100 acres of woodland provide a peaceful environment for exploration, away from the sounds of civilization. Even in winter, the landscape transforms into a serene snowy wonderland, offering unique recreational opportunities, although access may become walk-in only. The commitment to maintaining this natural environment is evident, ensuring a clean, undisturbed, and deeply immersive experience.

As a distinctive offering within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland provides services and goods that cater to a rustic yet comfortable camping experience. The campsites are generally primitive, meaning they typically lack electricity, plumbing, or air conditioning, encouraging a true disconnect from modern conveniences. However, the hosts go to great lengths to provide essential comforts. For instance, sites like the "Rock Bottom Cabin" and "Wooden Tent" include mattresses, sheets, and pillows, though guests are advised to bring their own sleeping bags or blankets. Fresh drinking water is provided in thermos jugs, and wash water in a barrel, reducing the need for campers to haul large quantities of water. Each campsite features an outhouse with toilet paper, a picnic table, and a fireplace or fire pit for cooking. A significant service provided is the complimentary supply of firewood, with donations accepted, ensuring campers can enjoy campfires without extra cost or effort. Access to some sites, particularly two of them, requires a 4WD vehicle with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance. However, for guests without suitable vehicles, the hosts offer assistance with transporting gear to the site using a UTV, or a tractor and trailer if conditions are poor, ensuring accessibility for all booked visitors. This hands-on assistance from the Gilles family highlights their dedication to guest convenience and satisfaction. Notably, children aged 12 and younger stay free at the campsites, making it an attractive option for families.

Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland boasts several unique features that set it apart from conventional campgrounds. A standout feature is the opportunity for guided tours of the working pasture-based dairy farm and cattle, available when scheduling allows. This provides an authentic agritourism experience, allowing campers to learn about sustainable farming practices and interact with the animals. The property offers over five miles of winding trails through its 100 acres of woodland. These trails are not only excellent for hiking and nature walks but are also suitable for fat biking or mountain biking, appealing to cycling enthusiasts. For winter users, the trails transform into a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging routes for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. The "Rock Bottom Cabin" is a notable feature, being the only heated and insulated site, making it suitable for winter bookings, albeit with walk-in access when snow is on the ground. The seclusion of the campsites is a primary feature, offering true privacy and a sense of being "off-grid." The policy of not allowing non-booked visitors reinforces the remote and exclusive nature of the experience. The inclusion of mattresses, sheets, and pillows at certain sites elevates the "primitive" camping experience, offering a touch of comfort often not found in basic tent sites. The presence of ample wildlife and the picturesque "bluff country" setting further enhance the unique appeal, providing opportunities for birdwatching and connecting with nature in a profound way.

For promotional information and booking, Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland operates through platforms such as Hipcamp, where they are highly rated. While specific "promotional offers" like percentage discounts may not be a constant feature, the unique value proposition of farm camping combined with secluded woodland sites is a strong draw. The clear communication about amenities provided (like firewood, water, and bedding at specific sites) and the complimentary stay for children 12 and under serve as attractive incentives. Pricing for sites is listed on their Hipcamp page. For example, the Rock Bottom Cabin, being more equipped for winter, might have different pricing or availability. Prospective campers are advised to check the Hipcamp listing or directly contact the Gilles family to confirm current rates, availability, and to coordinate gear transport if a 4WD vehicle is not available. The emphasis on booking in advance and communicating specific needs ensures a tailored and smooth arrival process. Reviews from past campers frequently highlight the excellent communication with hosts Mike and Joan Gilles, their helpfulness, and the pristine condition of the campsites and outhouses. This consistent positive feedback acts as a powerful form of promotion, building trust and encouraging new visitors. Given the secluded nature and the personalized service, booking directly or through their listed platform is the most effective way to secure a unique camping experience at Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland.

Lovely place with very nice hosts! We pulled in with our RV and no reservation, which was no problem because there was a brand new site with electricity available. Hay bales on one side, trees with birdsnests and a nice fireplace on the other side, in front a giant grass field with self built swings in trees for our kids to play with. Mike made us feel very welcome. Gave us a map of all the hiking trails around the farm, was very helpfull to explain everything. Within 15 min. they layed down a mat on the floor in front of our RV door to prevent dirty shoes inside and would not let us use our own stash of firewood. The kids loved to see all the animals and to do a hike in the woods. Mike and family thank you so much for having us and good luck with the farm and campground activities!

This was such an amazing camping experience, there’s no other way to put it. From the open lines of communication, private site, and extremely thoughtful details, this was by far one of my favorite getaways. Mike and Joan are the best hosts and you’re missing out if you don’t take advantage of their camping spots. My beagle and I thoroughly enjoyed the hiking trails around/through the property along with lounging by the campfire (plenty of cut wood ready to be burned). Mike was kind enough to check in on us and made sure we could get to/and out of the site. My Subaru Impreza 4WD has no problems getting down (and out) to the camp site, but Mike was ready to take us himself or help us if a tow was needed. The Wooden Tent itself was such a comfort especially during a few rain showers:) If you’re looking for a quiet escape with hiking and bird watching, this is the place! I plan on heading back as soon as I can!

To start with I am not the camping type guy but on July 12, 2019 Mike Gilles gave me, my wife and our son-in-law a tour of the Gilles farm Hip camp area. First I was struck by the beauty and size of this valley. Mike showed us the two cabin sites, one a double cabin tucked up into the hillside with a scenic view of the camp site. The other A-frame cabin site is closer to the valley floor but still plenty of beauty around you. In closing I liked all of nature around me and the way Mike & Joan Gilles creatively keep the critters at bay at the beautiful camps. Lots of trails to enjoy
