Introduction / Overview
Welcome to the heart of California’s desert recreation scene! Glamis Wash 1 RDLH is not a traditional developed campground, but rather a key location within the vast Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA), affectionately known to Californians as "Glamis." This area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is the nation's largest mass of sand dunes and the ultimate destination for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts.
Glamis Wash 1 RDLH is one of the designated "washes" or open camping areas that run along the railroad tracks and often feature slightly more hard-packed sand and gravel compared to the softer, deeper dune areas. This harder surface makes it a popular spot for large RVs and toy haulers to set up camp without immediately sinking into the sand.
The camping here is strictly dry camping or boondocking. This means visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own water, power (via generators), and managing all waste. The appeal of Glamis Wash 1 RDLH lies in its proximity to the action, the exhilarating freedom of open desert camping, and the vibrant, festive community that congregates here, especially during the October through April season and major holiday weekends.
It is a rugged, no-frills experience focused purely on the outdoor motorsports adventure, making it a must-visit for the seasoned dune rider and those seeking the quintessential Glamis atmosphere.

Location and Accessibility
Glamis Wash 1 RDLH is strategically located to offer optimal access to the Imperial Sand Dunes.
General Address: Brawley, CA 92227, USA
The camping area is situated within the broader Glamis recreation sector of the ISDRA. It is often reached by turning off State Route 78 and following the designated wash roads that provide access to the camping flats nestled between the highway/railroad line and the massive dunes themselves.
Accessibility and Terrain: While the wash areas are generally easier to navigate than the pure sand flats, they are still off-road environments. Large RVs and trailers can access this area, but drivers must be prepared for rough, washboard roads, deep sand in certain spots, and the need to air down tires for optimal traction. The 'Wash' designation typically means camping is situated in the natural drainage corridors, which have a firmer base of dirt and gravel.
Permits Required: The entire Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is a fee area from October 1st through April 15th. Visitors are required to purchase and display a permit for all primary vehicles entering the fee area. Permits must be purchased prior to arrival (to save money) or on-site at ranger stations or vendors.

What is Worth Choosing
Glamis Wash 1 RDLH is the perfect choice for the seasoned California OHV enthusiast who embraces the independent nature of boondocking but still wants to be in the center of the action. It is not the right choice for those seeking quiet solitude, paved pads, or full hookups.
You should choose Glamis Wash 1 RDLH if:
Be aware that this area can become extremely crowded and chaotic, particularly during holidays. Safety is paramount; campers are advised to set up visible, secure campsites away from high-traffic riding paths, especially after dark, to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for all. If you buy the shirt, make sure you secure your spot responsibly!

1st time to Glamis. Bought the shirt, had a good time. We will be back.
To many groups trying to block off access and then everyone late at night just flying over the hill after a couple drinks. Way to dangerous for us to camp, will use the flats or washes as people can see vs coming over on top of you.
Always a great time, but unfortunately, day 1 turned into a disaster. We crashed and flipped on a Dune hill right near the camp, good thing we had an RN and 2 firemen in our group and that's always a good thing to have.
Great place to take family to ride dirt bikes and sand rails
This was my first time to Glamis. My boyfriend grew up in San Diego and use to come here a lot it was nice he knew his way around. I had a blast and we will be back again.
