Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial Introduce

Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the brave fishermen who ventured out to sea from Gloucester Harbor, never to return. Located along Stacy Boulevard Waterfront Park, this memorial honors the 5,360 fishermen who lost their lives in harsh weather conditions, tragic accidents, or other maritime disasters.

  • Historic Statue: The centerpiece is a striking bronze statue of a fisherman in oilskins at the helm, capturing the essence of these hardy individuals.
  • Memorial Plaques: Surrounding the statue are semi-circular granite blocks adorned with bronze plaques listing the names of those who perished.
  • Historical Reflections: Visitors can imagine the bustling harbor, where schooners once sailed in search of cod. Tragically, many never returned, as evidenced by the 15 lost in a single 1862 storm.
  • Scenic Location: The memorial offers picturesque views of the waterfront and is near other attractions like Rockport's Motif #1 and the lobster boat 'Risky Business.'

This was a nice little walk. We visited in October so parking was pretty easy to find. Lots of memorials and benches to relax as you enjoy the views. There was a least one spot where you can go down steep wet stairs if the tide is low and walk along the water a tiny bit.

At Stacy Boulevard Waterfront Park stands the impressive bronze statue of the fisherman in his oilskins at the helm. He honors the 5,360 brave fishermen who sailed from this harbor to the fishing grounds in search of cod and other fish and who lost their lives in violent storms, or their vessel being run down by steamers in the shipping lanes, or tragically, their dory lost in the fog. While standing here, close your eyes and imagine the harbor filled with these two-masted workhorse schooners, some returning with their holds filled, others departing, never to return again to family or loved ones. Consider, in a single storm in 1862, 15 schooners were lost with their crews of 120 men. The semi-circular design has granite blocks with bronze plaques that lists the names of those fishermen. If you’ve come this far, head on up to Rockport and admire Motif #1. Not far away is a moored lobster boat, her name, ‘Risky Business.’

Just to learn about the area and how the film the Perfect Storm was about this area was incredible. The people are so kind it is so worth to just go sit on the rocky beach. We will miss Glouster

Such an emotional memorial and remembering the perfect storm was hard. All those lives lost. Our fishermen are so important and it was obvious that Gloucester felt that to the bone. If you are in the area, don't miss this memorial.
