Customer Reviews
Grace Coolidge is a small campground. Several of the sites, including ours, were pull over sites and hard to maneuver into. There is electric at each site but not water. Although there are about 9 campgrounds, there are only two dump stations in the entirety of Custer State Park. They are at Game Lodge Campground and Blue Bell Campground. Which means you have to travel from 2 to 20 miles to dump. The one cool thing about this Campground is that the Big Horn Sheep like to wander through.
Our campsite #12e was in the perfect location at the end of the row, against a big rock hill and the stream. The stream was perfect to listen to as I drifted to sleep. Ann, the volunteer host was phenomenal. My toddlers were attacked by a hive of bees when we first started setting up our camp. We weren't able to locate the host and the person at the reservation office we spoke to seemed to careless. If it weren't for Ann we were going to be forced to abandon our stay. She was great and we had an amazing time there, all thanks to her! We loved dour site, but custer needs an insight booking agent for issues like this.
This review is for the wonderful campground managers. We didn't camp here, but we accidentally locked our keys in our car in their parking lot. There is no cell phone service there but they had Starlink, so they made the phone call for us to get someone to come and unlock our car. They were so, so kind to and patient with us as we were really upset about locking our keys inside (something we've never done before!) and feeling trapped as there was no cell service and we were far away from our home in Wisconsin. It made a low point in our trip so much more bearable. I wish I had gotten their names and hope they see this, so if you are the campground managers and are reading this, the people who locked the keys in their blue Honda in early October 2023 say THANK YOU! Next time we visit Custer State Park, we will definitely be camping here.
I think all sites were electric hookup. Bathrooms were extremely clean and never busy. Potable water is available on the front of the shower house. It's very close to the highway, which means it's noisy during the day. That being said, there's a stream that runs alongside/behind some of the sites. The sound of the water is really nice to sit and enjoy/fall asleep to. It's a decent trade off for the traffic noise during the day. Fire rings and picnic tables are provided at each site. I travelled solo and felt very safe tent camping alone.
The tent only camp sites across the highway were very enjoyable! They're a bit close together and you don't get much for privacy but we had quiet neighbors so not a problem, the people on the other side were being quite loud so that would have not been as cool with how close the sites are. The sound of the river mostly drowns out noise from afar. All and all it was enjoyable!
