Gorgeous place. If you climb rocks or trout fish this is a really good spot. The Taylor river flows through pines next to the campsites creating the perfect amount of shade and white nose to cover passing cars and other campers for a very good nap or night of sleep. Below the Taylor Reservoir is the catch and release portions of the Taylor, tons of huge trout are visible from the bridge. Not the easiest fish to catch fish but normally has good water conditions when other places do not. The bathrooms aren’t the the greatest, not because of cleanliness. They have a strong urine smell, but to me it was a minor inconvenience.
The bad: You will be bothered by the camp host and other forest service workers if you dare to stay more than 14 days. There is usually NO ONE camping here but they would rather do the Barney Fife routine than make money. The good: Great spot for tent camping. Only 6 spots, all spread out. Taylor River on one side, canyon on the other. No running water or showers or anything but an out house so prepare to be tough. Road is not very noisy, close to Almont, Gunnison and Crested Butte. Only $14 per night.
Beautiful set of campsites along the river, with easy water access. Pit toilets on site, and not too far a drive from Almont for supplies/dining, or as a jumping off point to Taylor Reservoir or rock climbing. Be warned, as it is in a canyon, that you won't get a lot of sun throughout the day. This means cold, icy winters, but great respite from the hot summers in the surrounding elevations. (We stayed here one August after fleeing scorching, baked earth of Utah's lower parks on our way back to Denver - camping trip saved!)
Loved the place. We camped near to the river. You can hear the river. We had to pay 12 per night for tent. Restrooms were clean.
A good place th o enter the Taylor river to fish
