Grapevine Hills 3 Introduce
Grapevine Hills 3 is a primitive roadside campsite nestled within the vast and rugged landscape of Big Bend National Park in West Texas. Categorized under "Campgrounds & RV Parks," it offers a unique and distinctly undeveloped camping experience, catering to adventurers who prioritize solitude, incredible views, and a raw connection with the Chihuahuan Desert. Unlike more developed campgrounds within the park, Grapevine Hills 3 provides no amenities, emphasizing self-sufficiency and a true backcountry feel.
The environment surrounding Grapevine Hills 3 is quintessentially Big Bend: an arid, rocky desert landscape punctuated by dramatic geological formations and distant mountain ranges. The campsite itself is located along the Grapevine Hills dirt road, which begins 3.3 miles west of Panther Junction. Specifically, Grapevine Hills 3 is situated at the very end of this dirt road, approximately 7.7 miles from the paved section. This remote placement contributes significantly to its sense of isolation and tranquility.
The immediate vicinity of Grapevine Hills 3 features moderate ground cover and low shrubs, more so than some other Grapevine Hills sites, due to its proximity to Grapevine Spring. However, it is crucial to understand that there is no shade whatsoever at this campsite. Campers will be exposed to the full force of the Texas sun, which can be intense, especially during warmer months. The terrain is flat and gravelly, providing a suitable space to set up camp next to your vehicle.
Despite the lack of shade, the views from Grapevine Hills 3 are a major draw. Campers are treated to expansive vistas of the Chisos Mountains in the distance, providing a majestic backdrop to the desert scene. From Grapevine Hills 3 and 4, there are also good views of the Grapevine Hills themselves and the distant Rosillos Mountains. Furthermore, these end-of-the-road sites offer excellent sunset views of the Deadhorse Mountains and the Sierra del Carmen, creating breathtaking evening spectacles.
Wildlife is present in the area, and Javelina are known to frequent the Grapevine Hills. This necessitates strict adherence to food storage guidelines; all food and aromatic items, including coolers, must be securely stored inside vehicles to prevent aggressive encounters with these wild animals. The overall climate is arid, with hot summers and mild winters, although temperatures can drop significantly at night. Surface water at Grapevine Spring is rarely present, reinforcing the need for campers to bring all their water.
As a primitive roadside campsite within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, Grapevine Hills 3 offers minimal services, placing the onus of comfort and preparation entirely on the camper. There are no toilets, no potable water, and no shade provided at the site. The use of generators is strictly prohibited, maintaining the natural quiet of the backcountry.
Each site at Grapevine Hills 3 offers a small, flat gravel space for camping. While it is a "drive-in" site, the road conditions are a critical service consideration. The Grapevine Hills Road is accessible to most vehicles only as far as Grapevine Hills 2 (approximately 3.8 miles down the dirt road). Beyond that point, including the access to Grapevine Hills 3, the road becomes very rocky and rough, unequivocally requiring a high-clearance vehicle. It is explicitly stated that sedans, minivans, trailers, or RVs of any kind should NOT attempt to reach this campsite, as vehicles may be seriously damaged, and rangers will not issue permits for such vehicles.
Grapevine Hills 3 can accommodate a maximum of 2 vehicles and 6 people. Importantly, trailers are considered vehicles for site capacity and are NOT permitted at this specific site. The maximum vehicle length allowed is 25 feet. While there are no facilities, some sources mention the presence of a bear/javelina box for food storage, which is a valuable safety feature in this wildlife-rich area. Camping permits for Grapevine Hills 3 can be obtained up to 180 days in advance through Recreation.gov, with a permit fee of typically $10 per night (subject to change).
Campers are responsible for packing out all trash and waste, adhering to Leave No Trace principles. Campfires are generally restricted to designated fire rings in developed campgrounds, and primitive sites like Grapevine Hills 3 usually have prohibitions on open fires, especially during dry conditions. Portable propane cooking stoves are generally permitted.
The defining features of Grapevine Hills 3 are its profound sense of solitude, its connection to a unique geological attraction, and its status as a gateway to unparalleled stargazing. Being one of the last sites on the Grapevine Hills Road, it experiences less traffic than sites closer to the paved road, contributing to a more secluded experience.
One of the main attractions of the Grapevine Hills area, accessible from the campground, is the Grapevine Hills Trail. This moderate 2.2-mile round trip trail leads through a boulder-strewn valley to the iconic Balanced Rock formation. While the trailhead parking area is located further down the road from GH-2, it's a relatively short drive from GH-3 with a high-clearance vehicle. The trail itself, though short, involves some climbing over rocky terrain, offering a rewarding adventure for hikers. The distinct geology of the Grapevine Hills, with its rounded boulders, is a testament to spheroidal weathering, providing an interesting natural spectacle.
The vast, unlit skies of Big Bend National Park offer some of the best stargazing opportunities in North America. With virtually no light pollution, campers at Grapevine Hills 3 are treated to an incredible display of stars, planets, and the Milky Way. This natural feature alone makes the primitive camping experience worthwhile for many visitors.
The remote location also means increased opportunities for wildlife viewing, from desert birds to larger mammals like deer and javelina. The relative quiet allows for a more intimate connection with the desert's rhythms and sounds.
Grapevine Hills 3 offers a compelling invitation for those who truly wish to unplug and immerse themselves in the raw, untamed beauty of Big Bend National Park. This isn't a campsite for those seeking extensive amenities, but rather for intrepid adventurers who are well-prepared for a self-sufficient experience in a remote desert environment. Imagine the quiet vastness, the towering Chisos Mountains bathed in sunset hues, and the breathtaking canopy of a billion stars overhead.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable trip, planning is paramount. Secure your backcountry permit well in advance via Recreation.gov, especially during peak seasons. Absolutely ensure your vehicle has high clearance, as attempting the Grapevine Hills Road without one will lead to serious issues. Pack in all your water, food, and supplies, and be prepared to pack out all your waste. Bring plenty of sun protection, including hats and sunscreen, as there is no natural shade.
Embrace the challenges and rewards of primitive camping at Grapevine Hills 3. Hike the Grapevine Hills Trail to witness the unique Balanced Rock, explore the desert landscape, and spend your evenings under a celestial show unlike any other. This campsite is your direct gateway to an authentic Big Bend experience, offering a profound sense of solitude and connection to the desert's majestic power. Come prepared, respect the wilderness, and leave nothing but footprints, taking only memories of an unforgettable desert adventure.

This is probably one of the easiest out of the way campsites to get to in the park. It's possibly the only campsite with phone service. Even though Grapevine 4 is nearby there's quite a bit of thick brush that blocks the view. I preferred Grapevine 3 over 4 because it was more open and you could easily explore the area from the campsite. Grapevine 4 is surrounded by thick brush so you can't really explore. It's a great spot to camp, lots to explore with a great hiking trail about a quarter mile away. The campsite was nice and clean and the ranger that came through was really nice and kind. I came in February and even then it was hot and the sun was relentless. There isn't any shade at this campsite so I recommend bringing a canopy. Bring lots of water! My buddy and I went through 15 gallons in 6 days. I found a deer antler out there so post a photo if you find it. I'd love to see how it holds up over time. Anyway this is a great spot and I recommend it.
This place was further out past the balanced rock trailhead. Would not recommend driving a non 4wd vehicle put here. It said no trailers, but we got our overland trailer there with no issues. Do the hike before you go, balanced rock and views are spectacular. Very easy hike.
Large site all the way at the end of Grapevine Hills road. Large animal den nearby. Lots of exploring possible in the canyons to the east of the road and along the Grapevine Hills trail. Easy to get there with a high clearance vehicle.
Very remote, no one even close to us, loved primitive back country site! Beautiful sunrise too!
Very private, good AT&T signal.
