Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For seasoned Minnesota adventurers, the **Grassy Islands South K9 Campsite** offers one of the most desirable and rewarding primitive camping experiences in the state, located deep within **Voyageurs National Park (VNP)** on the waters of **Kabetogama Lake**. This is not a drive-in site; rather, it is a designated **boat-in campsite** that promises true island solitude and panoramic views, perfectly embodying the spirit of VNP's water-based wilderness.
K9 is officially classified as a **Small Campsite**, designed to accommodate a maximum of nine people across its two dedicated tent pads. However, the site’s unique geography is its key feature: the tent sites are situated **"up on the hill and have wonderful views,"** providing a majestic vantage point over the lake. Campers consistently praise the island's natural bounty, noting that the **"entire island is covered in raspberries and blue berries,"** providing a delightful opportunity for natural foraging.
As a National Park Service (NPS) frontcountry campsite, Grassy Islands South K9 requires **advance reservations and a permit** obtained through Recreation.gov. The experience is intentionally rustic and self-sufficient, featuring only essential primitive amenities like an outdoor privy and bear lockers. While the paddle in is described as **"pretty easy,"** the exposed nature of the lake means it is not recommended for those **"not used to open water,"** as conditions can change rapidly. The reward for this effort is a genuinely secluded island haven, complete with local wildlife like the **"family of wood ducks who hang out on the shore."**

I loved this island! The tent sites are up on the hill and have wonderful views. The entire island is covered in raspberries and blue berries, and there is a family of wood ducks who hang out on the shore by the table. The paddle in was pretty easy, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone not used to open water. The landing is on the western side of the island and a little more protected from the wind.
To campsites on this small island. Small beach access on one side. Beautiful rock face on the other. We stopped here for a while to picnic and play in the water.
Kind of open if the wind is coming from the East. All in all, it is a good campsite however there are a little bit of elevation changes for the location of the tent, canoe, table, latrine.
This camp site is great and has amazing views of the lake, highly recommend!
