This park is like a buffet: I’ll take one glacier, one cave, and a bunch of really old trees. 😁 The cave tour was very cool. I hiked to the glacier and got to see the bristlecone pines which was a neat experience. That part of the park is much cooler/colder so make sure you are prepared. I was there in mid-October and it was cold! The small crowds are definitely a bonus in this park.
I visited Great Basin NP in July 2021 (the 5th -7th) and I camped in Upper Lehman Creek campground at site #20. It was very secluded and I had a private entry to the creek-- loved it! I had like zero reception (T-Mobile) though, and the nearby towers in Utah were messing with the time on my phone, so I had to triple check the time at the Visitor Center so I wouldn't miss my tour. The tour itself was worth it and really well paced. It was definitely the highlight for me, but the trails were lovely too. I wouldn't necessarily plan a super long visit to the park unless you plan on backcountry hiking/camping because the park is in a pretty isolated area. Shameless plug for my national park adventures: I'm @domsdillydallies on Instagram
The cave was ok, but the park is gorgeous!! I loved the vast views and learning about the Great Basin. Had no idea the park has a very small glacier! The best trail leads to the bristlecone pines. What an amazing thing to see. Educational placards along the trail. Take trekking poles as the trail is filled with boulders and stones. Very worth the hike. If they could only figure out how to get these 5,000 year old beauties to talk! Can you imagine what they have witnessed?? Super cool experience.
Stayed at Baker Creek campground for the night we got lucky & had clear skies. Boy was it amazing better than several other certified dark sky’s parks we have been to. If you plan on doing the Lehman Caves tour make sure you book well in advance
Hidden gem in Nevada. The perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of your daily life and enjoy nature at its peak of beauty. I believe the Great Basin National Park is a highly underrated place. Yes, it is very remote. The drive to get there and the park itself have so much to offer though. Endless vistas, snow-covered mountains and half-frozen streams during wintertime, peace and quiet. While I’m certain it isn’t the place for everyone, it surely is the place for people that enjoy simple nature and do not need a million tourist attractions to be satisfied. Side note for any vegans traveling to Great Basin: there’s a wonderful little store in town that does sell some vegan food and snacks. For a bigger lunch or dinner I would suggest you bring something along, as there weren’t any restaurants in the proximity (and by that I mean over a hundred miles) of the park.
