This is a fantastic idea for a state park. It’s primarily a museum about Native American history in Ohio. They have a short video in a small theater, a number of exhibits, and lots of information. There’s also two short trails behind the building.
Great new State Park. Can’t wait to see what else they do with it. The center has a great historical timeline of the area and artifacts. I haven’t done the walking trail yet but I will in the future. Parking can be a challenge on peak days.
Ohio’s newest state park features excellent exhibits and interactivity. The exhibits are very well done and showcase quite a bit of local history, both of the indigenous communities (Shawnee and others) and later settlers. Many different exhibits feature content to engage children with special signs and interactive components. You will definitely learn something new and have an enjoyable time exploring this small but well done park.
A wonderful FREE historical State Park in progress! Both parking lots are a mess. There are 4 entry/exit points in the gravel lot. People park where there are not spots, blocking an entry/exit. It's an accident waiting to happen. There is a very small lot that is paved and only has a few handicap spaces. The gravel lot has no connection somewhere safe for pedestrians. Thus, people are walking on the freshly seeded grass. They have pedestrians walking into oncoming vehicles entering into the paved lot. Better signage should have been added to the gravel lot. If the parking situation were safer, I'd give it another star. Inside, there are three floors of things to see. Great history of the area. There is an informative movie that plays all day. Fully wheelchair accessible. ADA compliant doors, elevator and restrooms. The restrooms are in the lobby. Skimped on the men's restroom, as there is only one stall. There are a few picnic tables out back in the open. Would be great to see those covered in the future. Much more information on the outside all around the building. There is one trail around the current wildflowers. It started to rain, so we will visit that another time.
A brand new Ohio State Park. The visitor center is on the site of the former Tecumseh Motel. The State did a great job on this facility. The site is the former Old Town or Chillicothe, the principal village of the Shawnee. The facility gives you good information on the Shawnee that lived here, including Cornstalk, Black Fish, and the birthplace of Tecumseh. There is also a short 1/2 mile hiking trail on the grounds. There is also a bit of history on frontiersmen Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone, who were captured by the Shawnee and held at this village until their eventual escape. A great historical account of the native indigenous people and their struggle with Western expansion.
