Immerse Yourself in a Unique Desert and Mountain Environment
Great Sand Dunes Oasis is strategically located to offer unparalleled access to the dramatic landscape of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Imagine camping with the towering, windswept dunes as a breathtaking backdrop, set against the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The environment is a captivating blend of desert and alpine ecosystems, creating a truly unique setting. You can expect expansive views of the massive sand dunes, which are the tallest in North America, and the rugged peaks of the mountains rising sharply in the distance. The contrast between the sandy terrain and the verdant foothills creates a visually stunning and ecologically diverse area.
The natural environment surrounding Great Sand Dunes Oasis offers a range of experiences depending on the season. During the warmer months, expect sunny days and warm nights, perfect for exploring the dunes and engaging in outdoor activities. Be prepared for the heat reflecting off the sand. In the spring and fall, temperatures are generally milder, offering comfortable conditions for hiking and camping. Evenings can get cool, especially at higher elevations. The winter months bring snow to the mountains and sometimes the dunes, creating a different kind of stark beauty and opportunities for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in certain areas. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits this region, including various bird species, deer, and smaller desert animals adapted to the unique conditions.
A significant natural feature near many campgrounds in this area is Medano Creek, a seasonal creek that flows along the base of the dunes in the spring and early summer. This creates a natural beach-like environment and opportunities for splashing and playing in the shallow water, a particularly popular activity for families.

Customer Reviews
We stayed in the cabins. Would be a nice change from sleeping on the ground camping, though our stay was in between hotels. The mattresses are a little hard after motel mattresses! One light, two outlets. Cute table and chairs set. There were four bunked twins in our cabin (two sets of two twin bunks). Great views!! Was able to rent a sand sled and sand surf board at the shop. The restaurant was really good. The bathrooms were a walk down a hill and had nice hot water. Remember to turn in your old style actual keys on check out.
Pros: full hookup and close to Great Sand Dunes NP. Good view of park from camp spot. And they rent sleds. $20/board/day. Cons: Our campsite are not very long and narrow, we have 30' 5th wheel and had to unhook to not block the driveway for others and a tree with super low branches that blocked the site. Sites are gravel, not super level. The fee we were charged was higher than they told us when we made the reservation plus they added a 2% CC charge, which we are fine with but didn't tell us that until after they processed payment. Ended up $65. The bugs were also pretty bad. This was our last stop of 12 parks and definitely the worst for bugs.
Absolute heaven after a day of trekking in Great Sand Dunes National Park. Campsites were beautifully scattered uphill from the dunes to allow for perfect stargazing. Showers were hot and clean. Clean restrooms too. Couldn't ask for a better camping experience. PLUS the service was amazing. Really great people working here. A wonderful experience.
Great place to stay if you visit the Great Sand Dune National Park. Closest to the entrance. Gorgeous views of the sand dunes and great place to watch the sunset. Site are pretty close together though. Bathrooms were clean. Would stay here again if in the area.
We really love this place! Great camp sites that are actually at the base of a mountain in the trees. It gives you that real camping experience. The bathrooms and shower house are nice and we loved that they had a spot to do dishes and fill up water. It makes the primitive camping experience a little easier. We will definitely come here again!
