Customer Reviews
Drought has been tough for locals and industry. With a 4x4 I was able to get all the way down to water, very peaceful until a Lakehead local herassed me for taking their spot.
I prefer dispersed camping where I can find it (difficult to find in CA compared to most other states west of the Mississippi), but I'm usually prepared for dry camping when traveling. Though it is state managed, similar to many primitive Bureau of Land Management sites across the country. There is an actual campground locked up, porta-potties also locked up (if this stuff gets used at all, it's seemingly limited during the calendar year), but the rest of the area is free reign (usually at least one RV near the spacious river bank; but the limited car-camping-friendly lanes under the shady tree canopy, that are my preference, have usually been unpopulated in my experience). As always: practice fire-safety knowledge, follow local condition ordinances, and obtain permits when required. Excellent chill-spot worth exploring for both locals and travellers alike (maybe also making it a good place for locals and travellers to meet). Be respectful (don't steal other people's engraved flasks, drink the whiskey if you must but return the flask, and for Pete's sake don't litter), mindful (the least possible impact on nature you can make), and safe (again, fire is real). Hope you find the magic the area is offering!
Looks like it might have been something back in the day. I live nearby and was only strolling through in a car. It's free, that's always good!
I loved this lake, was clear and clean omg I stayed in the water all day. Was worth the 4hour drive for us..
- Free dispersed camping on the shoreline. No facilities (aka pack in/out). - Beautiful & quiet despite being relatively close to the highway. - The road you take to get there is flanked on either side by burned land with remnants of old neighborhoods. Fires (even propane campstoves!) require permits.
