A strenuous 3 mile hike with 2000' of elevation gain will bring you to the high backcountry camp on the slopes of Guadalupe Peak. Unmatched views of the surrounding mountains in the one side and endless desert views to the east make this campsite hard to beat. Relax in the shade of the pines as your legs recover from the climb. At only 1 mile and 1000' below the summit, this camp makes a great jumping off point for a sunrise trip to the highest point in TX.
Prepare for wind and a hard hike. Worth the effort!
Overall a nice campground. Wish there were more camp sites as it gets crowded quickly. There is not a reservation system, and on Saturday morning, the park people came around asking if we were staying or leaving because others were wanting to camp. Some camp sites have some shade, but most don't. Camp sites are pretty close to each other (20yds ish). No wood or charcoal fires allowed which was a bummer, but then again it is the desert. Outhouse at tents site, with hand sanitizer and lots of TP. Everything was well maintained. Running water restrooms, water spout, and dish washing sink at RV site just up the road 100yds. Access to a lot of trails, including the Guadeloupe Peak trail, is right there at the campground. We will definitely be back to hike more someday.
Tent pads are decent. Views awesome. Wind can be an issue. Good base from which to summit.
incredible camp site with epic views. by far the most difficult hike in Texas
Clean and well maintained, obviously in a great location on top of the mountains and secluded, away from the trail. There was a lot of rock around an inch underground at this campsite in the photos, which made pinning into the ground very difficult. There are several hooks along the perimeter of the campsite, which are very handy to secure cord to, which is super useful in windy conditions.
