Gum Springs Campground and Picnic Area Introduce
🌲 **Introduction / Overview**
For Louisiana residents seeking a truly tranquil, back-to-nature camping experience without the complexity or cost of a full-amenity resort, **Gum Springs Campground and Picnic Area** is a cherished find. Nestled within the **Winn District of the Kisatchie National Forest**, this site offers a peaceful escape defined by its charming setting in rolling, hilly terrain and shaded pine and hardwood bottoms.
Gum Springs operates on a **basic, self-sufficient model**, making it highly appealing to tent campers, small RV owners, and anyone craving solitude. As one reviewer aptly put it, it's a "peaceful gem in Louisiana’s pine forest. Perfect for hikers, tent campers, and anyone craving solitude." The campground is famous for its **affordable, self-serve fee** of typically only $10 per night, which is unbeatable for a National Forest experience. The recreation complex also carries a rich history, with its design and construction dating back to the **Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) era of the 1930s**.
While the campground is not equipped with modern hookups like electric or water at every site, the atmosphere is noted as being **safe, serene, and beautifully scenic**. It embodies a true forest camping environment, providing essential amenities while preserving the natural quiet of the Kisatchie wilderness.

🗺️ **Location and Accessibility**
Gum Springs Campground is strategically located in **Winn Parish, Louisiana**, deep within the **Winn Ranger District of the Kisatchie National Forest**. The main access point is conveniently situated near the Ranger District office at **12319 US-84, Winnfield, LA 71483, USA**.
Access is relatively easy for all vehicle types. From the nearby town of Winnfield, travelers drive approximately 8 miles west on **US Highway 84** to reach the well-signed recreation area junction. The campground’s central location makes it an accessible retreat for many parts of the state:
A short drive from **Winnfield**, ensuring quick access to gas, ice, and basic supplies.
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes from **Shreveport** and about 2 hours from **Alexandria**, making it a viable weekend destination for Northern and Central Louisiana residents.
Internal roads are generally well-maintained, and campsites are described as **nice and level**, accommodating both tent setups and smaller, self-contained RVs (though large RVs should verify site size and road clearance with the Winn Ranger District office).

Customer Reviews
Nice, quiet campground, almost no road noise. They have trash cans and one water spigot, but no connections for trailers. The sites are nice and level, and there’s a $10 self-serve fee cash only. The place felt very safe and the scenery was beautiful.
A peaceful gem in Louisiana’s pine forest. Perfect for hikers, tent campers, and anyone craving solitude. Trails are beautiful, sites are shaded and private, and the cost is unbeatable. Occasional highway noise is the only minor downside.
The Gum Springs Campground is beautiful, they have several paths and trails that you can explore. Also, they have small stopping points that include picnic tables, benches, and small pavilion's. There's a beautiful little lake available and if you're interested in fishing that's an option. I haven't exactly known anyone to catch any fish here but you might have better luck. This is a quiet and serene location and I recommend giving it a shot, even if you just pop in for a bit. There's parking available at the front and you can just stop and take a quick walk around, if you need to stretch your legs, you don't have to drive to far in. The campsites are nice, have plenty of space, and include their own picnic tables, fire rings, and parking. There are a few water spouts throughout the campground, at least one of them is located at an actual campsite but I can't tell you exactly where. It's also a very affordable place to camp. There isn't very much light at this location, and it's usually quiet, so you'll quickly find yourself surrounded by the chirp of crickets and the stars at night. It can also feel a bit eerie in the darkness once the quiet sinks in, it's very calm, though. They don't provide electricity at this location and there aren't showers available. They have restrooms but no electricity in them either, so if you're going to the restroom at night you will need to have a flashlight (or phone) available. There is a good bit of wildlife in this area so remember to keep your food put away while you're visiting and use the designated dumpsters for any trash that you want to dispose of when you leave. This is an adorable place and if you enjoy this sort of stuff I'm sure you'll love it!
The restrooms look like our house facilities with no shower... The campsite is dry dock no electric or water.. 5g by T-Mobile is about 3-4 bars. Quiet and nice facility
It's nice and quiet but could be better if we were in lot #16, > well we found out 16 wasn't so great after all closer to lake gives you more nats n mosquitoes also to many people using the toilets, we even saw an alligator about 4ft. Long I think from now on we'll keep using # 9 quieter and No mosquitos or people
