Hey there, fellow North Carolinians! Are you dreaming of a coastal camping adventure that combines modern comfort with the untamed beauty of our state's barrier islands? Look no further than Hammocks Beach State Park Mainland Campground, a gem nestled near Swansboro. This recently upgraded campground offers a fantastic basecamp for exploring one of North Carolina's most beloved state parks, providing a seamless blend of convenience and natural wonder. Our aim with this article is to give you a clear, engaging, and informative overview of this exceptional campground, helping you plan your next unforgettable beachside retreat right here in North Carolina.
Hammocks Beach State Park is renowned for its pristine barrier islands, particularly Bear Island, which offers miles of undeveloped beachfront. While primitive camping is available on Bear Island, the Mainland Campground provides a more accessible and amenity-rich experience, perfect for families, RVers, and those who appreciate modern conveniences while still being immersed in nature. The recent upgrades have transformed this mainland spot into a highly desirable destination, celebrated for its well-kept grounds and top-notch facilities. We know North Carolinians cherish their access to both the mountains and the coast, and this campground perfectly encapsulates the serene beauty of our coastline, making it an ideal choice for your next escape.
Location and Accessibility
Hammocks Beach State Park Mainland Campground is specifically located at 189 Ffa Camp Rd, Swansboro, NC 28584, USA. This address places it conveniently near the charming coastal town of Swansboro, North Carolina, within Onslow County. Swansboro is part of the Southern Outer Banks, often referred to as the Crystal Coast, known for its beautiful beaches, estuaries, and maritime forests.
Accessibility to the mainland campground is straightforward. From I-95, you would typically take I-40 East to NC 24, then follow NC 24 East through Jacksonville to Swansboro. From there, you turn right onto Hammocks Beach Road, and the campground (sometimes referred to as Simmons Mainland Campground) is about a quarter-mile on the right, with the main park entrance and ferry dock a bit further down. This easy drive makes it readily accessible for residents across North Carolina, from the Triangle and Triad regions to those living closer to the coast.
Unlike the primitive camping on Bear Island, which requires a ferry or private boat, the Mainland Campground offers 24-hour drive-up access, making it convenient for both tent and RV campers. While some reviewers noted the removal of trees for safety, resulting in less shade or privacy in certain areas, the large, flat sites and well-planned utilities contribute to easy setup and comfortable stays. The location provides quick access to the park's visitor center and the ferry service to Bear Island, putting the best of Hammocks Beach State Park within easy reach for all visitors.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Hammocks Beach State Park Mainland Campground is an exceptionally suitable destination for North Carolina locals, offering a quintessential coastal camping experience with a host of advantages. For those of us who call the Tar Heel State home, the appeal lies in its pristine environment combined with modern comforts, all within a reasonable drive to our beautiful Crystal Coast. The "great new campground" with its "large, flat sites" and "modern and well planned" utilities caters perfectly to various camping styles, from tenting to RVing, ensuring a comfortable stay for any local family or group.
A standout feature, consistently highlighted by reviews, is the "awesome bath house" which is "exceptional" and meticulously clean, providing a level of comfort not always found in state park campgrounds. This makes a significant difference for longer stays or for refreshing after a day exploring the salt air. While the "little noise from Camp Lejeune and practicing jets" is part of the local experience, the trade-off of "birds, awesome bath house, large, flat sites, and breeze off the water" is clearly worth it.
The true magic for locals, however, lies in the unparalleled access to Bear Island via the convenient ferry service from the mainland. This undeveloped barrier island offers miles of pristine beach for swimming, shelling, and fishing, allowing North Carolinians to truly immerse themselves in our state's untouched coastal beauty. The combination of easy drive-up access to a comfortable, well-equipped mainland campground, coupled with the immediate gateway to an unspoiled island wilderness, makes Hammocks Beach State Park Mainland Campground an ideal and truly special choice for any North Carolina local seeking a memorable and restorative coastal adventure.

Great new campground! A little noise from Camp Lejeune and practicing jets, but the birds, awesome bath house, large, flat sites, and breeze off the water more than made up for that!
Beautiful new campground. Lawns are well kept and bathhouse was exceptional. Sites are large and utilities modern and well planned. There is no privacy or shade since all the trees were removed within the campground. Others will view that as safety... just a matter of personal preferences. Hammocks Beach State Park is amazing.
What a wonderful new campground !!! The sites are huge & very level. Our host Debbie was great also. We were fortunate to have great weather.
This is a beautiful place for the camping pitch, for the kayaking it is the best and for the toilet block...Wow! I loved my 4 night stay, I will definitely come back.
Very nice family friendly , quiet. close to beaches , recommend taking ferry over to Bear Island.
