Private and resolute place to utilize AS LONG AS YOU SCOUT AHEAD OF YOUR VEHICLE. Let me just say this location is a tow truck’s bread and butter of you’re not cautious. Peace and quiet. Lots of green.

Just spent a night car camping here on our road trip. It was very peaceful - no one else drove by us. We didn’t see any cows or snakes but we saw some quails and a road runner. We were looking forward to spending the day in the lake since we arrived late at night. The lake has dried up a lot so we weren’t able to reach it from our camping spot.

Nice place for free & legal dispersed camping, plenty of space and cool little rocky hill to climb. Vistas in all directions for days. 4WD vehicle would be fun here.

The worst side of lake Isabella to go. The sand is extremely loose and deep. If you drive even halfway to the water, expect to get stuck. Also the lakebed itself is junk. More of a swamp side to lake Isabella. I will never go to this side of the lake again, and definitely don't recommend.

The road is too treacherous for an RV and as of 3/18/25 it is flooded. Only about 1/4 of a mile can be traveled on the road, absolutely no camping locations.

I tried out some dispersed camping here at Hanning Flat and I was driving towards the lake and my car got stuck in sand. It was a dumb mistake but I learned my lesson. Luckily, I was able to make phone calls and use internet on my phone from here. I called for help and got out. Just a warning for any off-road newbies out there. Pay attention and don't drive towards the lake unless you know for sure your vehicle can handle sand and make sure you have a shovel and a tire traction device with you in case you still get stuck. Here'a photo of my car in the sand and a pin drop to show the location where I was stuck.
