🏕️ An Introduction to Harding Hill Campground at Cheney State Park

For Kansans seeking a genuine, straightforward outdoor experience, **Harding Hill Campground** offers an appealing retreat. Situated within the sprawling **Cheney State Park**, this particular campground provides a distinctly primitive camping environment, focusing on the simple pleasure of tent camping beneath the vast Kansas sky. Unlike some of the more developed areas within the park, Harding Hill is specifically designated for tents, offering a return to nature without the bustle of large RV setups. It's a key part of the larger recreational opportunities surrounding Cheney Reservoir, a body of water famed across the United States, especially in the sailing community.

Cheney State Park itself is a massive 1,900-acre oasis completed in 1964, providing a diverse landscape for wildlife watching, fishing, and water sports. Harding Hill is strategically located to offer campers quick access to the reservoir's activities, making it a perfect base camp for those wanting to spend their days on the water or exploring the shoreline. While the camping here is on the simpler side—tent-only and vehicles are generally kept off the grass—it provides a peaceful, open, and potentially very breezy setting, characteristic of the central Kansas plains. The focus at Harding Hill is on the natural surroundings and the community of fellow outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a more rustic approach to their weekend getaway or cross-state adventure. It’s a dedicated spot for those who prefer the feel of the earth beneath their tent and the sounds of nature surrounding them.

We camped here on our cross country trip from Michigan to Albuquerque. We were the only people in the Harding Hill campground which is tent camping only. Vehicles are not allowed on the grass. We were not sure if you park alongside the road? The wind blew all night long, I’m not sure if that was because of hurricane Ian? This is supposed to be the best sailing like in the US.
