I gave this a 3 because you need to really be super into this to have any benefit from visiting. It's just a place in the middle of the desert where there was once a place where they got borax. All you have now is a few wagons, a ruined house, and a few plaques that tell you what happened there in the late 1880s It's interesting for grown ups that appreciate the history, but for kids there is nothing to see. You should go to the borax museum for better effect.
Pretty interesting place. The night sky here is gorgeous. I came here 3 times while visiting Death Valley to check out the night sky. Keep an eye out for Kangaroo rats, I was lucky enough to see quite a few of them.
Been here multiple times but it's always worth the quick pit stop. Plus it's an easy walk from the parking lot area. It's also amazing to see what remains of the Borax Works. People back in the day were definitely built differently with a sprinkle of tenacity.
The Harmony Borax Works stands as a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of those who worked in the harshest of environments. Operational between 1883 and 1888, this site in Death Valley National Park was pivotal in the borax industry, employing the iconic "20-mule teams" to transport the mineral from the depths of the valley. Today, it serves as a fascinating historical point, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore a significant chapter in the region’s development. Its recognition on the National Register of Historic Places underscores its importance and preserves its legacy for future generations.
A lot of history here. I cannot imagine how hard are the workers to dig borax in the summer.
