Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Hawks Nest Backpack Camp offers a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to immerse themselves in nature. Located in Sunol, California, this charming campground is part of the renowned Calaveras Big Trees State Park, providing easy access to breathtaking trails and serene surroundings.
Perfect for those seeking a primitive camping experience, Hawks Nest features small tent sites that cater to backpackers and solo adventurers. While space is limited—suitable only for one small tent—the campsite offers proximity to essential amenities like water and toilets.
Customers praise the campsite for its gorgeous views and proximity to water and toilet facilities. However, some note that it's situated under a major flight path, suggesting the use of ear plugs for a quieter experience.
Running water
Smack between the toilet and the water spigot. Great spot! Hikers will pass thru your camp to on the trail. Small- only enough space for one small tent. Eagle’s Aerie has more space. The hike up was strenuous.
Gorgeous views, close to water (needs to be treated) and the toilet. There is room for four single-person tents. There's a picnic table and a cook table (brilliant!). The only downside to this site is that it's directly underneath a major flight path. You'll hear planes every few minutes until midnight and then again starting around 5:30am. Bring ear plugs!
Great view and water for needed break.
