This is not just a simple campground; it is a premier destination for Texans seeking a rich, immersive East Texas wilderness experience. For Texans, the Hen House Ridge Unit is worth choosing primarily for its unmatched access to both land and water recreation in a unique, lush setting. The existence of the officially designated, sandy-bottomed swimming area provides a clean, safe, and family-friendly place to cool off during the Texas summer, a major draw for inland parks.

This is a nice park, where the attendant in the main office/store was pleasant and answers our questions both in person and over the phone. Sometimes I’ve had strange issues trying to speak to a person and then they have an attitude when you get them on the phone, but not here. There is bridge construction closing down parts of the main park, but this specific part, hen house ridge, is fully open with camping spots, RV spaces and what looked like cabins. There is a day use area where we went swimming. The swimming area is blocked off from the lake with buoys, and the bottom of the lake has sand there which makes it nice. The entrance to the swimming area, that you walk down into the water through, is concrete. The water was especially cold on this 80 degree day, but the overcast sky was nice. The day use area was family friendly, with kids playing and birds chirping and music playing. The bathroom was a short walk away.
LOVE the trails here! There is a trail for every level of hiker and the scenery is breathtaking! Out of the six hiking trails at this park, the Slough Trail is my favorite; lots of diversity in the landscape and the animals.
Beautiful park with mature tall oak trees. Bird call program was very educational. Spiders here are super weaver's, they can build in giant speed, and they make big big big webs. Watch where you walk. Now, the 3 stars are due to bathroom conditions. Milipeds are like horror movie volume. All over the shower wall, and spider webs in the shower is like Halloween decorations. Definitely need a good cleaning a few times a day.
Something for the whole family. Swimming, kayak rental, fishing, playgrounds and dog friendly. The bathhouse is a bit dated and rundown, but functional. We got a Texas Park pass and it paid for itself in one stay. Very nice camp host. Barbara and Craig, as well as Ms Eve, made us feel very welcome. Thank you.
Love the park. Good spots that are well spaced. Lots to do with trails and water. The facilities are really run down though. There is a road repair project underway, but it's not the roads that need repair (6/21). The restrooms need a total teardown and rebuild with better shower system. Please keep some of the spiders at bay when cleaning too. The bugs were horrible at this time and the heat/humidity was rough too. Mowing the tall grass between sites would help with bugs...you know ticks are an issue here.
