This place is nowhere near what it used to be... Hickory Star used to be a vibrant beautiful place to visit. We used to camp here all the time when we were kids. They had a great restaurant, a sparkling blue pool, a beautiful fun campground... now it just looks neglected, outdated, & run down. They closed the pool for no reason, the campground is terrible, the docks look like they're falling apart, there is nothing for kids to do, no park, no swimming area, nothing... The current owners just need to walk away. They need to sell it to a company that actually wants to invest time, attention, and money into this place. The potential is limitless here and the right person could truly turn it back into something incredible.
The pizza was really good. The other food was just ok. I would have just stuck with the pizza if I went back again. I am not a huge fan of smoking and they allowed smoking in the dock where everyone was eating. I get that it’s a free country, but maybe have them smoke away from families with young children? Overall the kids liked the pizza and their pretzel and cheese so they were happy. Not a bad option if you are on the lake and want something to eat.
I can't speak in hotel.. I stayed in a floating house. I did look around it was very pleasant to look around. I seen a pool, and campground, cabin rentals. Drove to marina, on a Saturday night, there was a live band. They do serve beer only.. water is warm & beautifully clear..
This review is for how wonderful Richard at Hickory Star Marina is. We ran out of gas after hours at the marina when we were on our rental pontoon, far from our VRBO. My husband ran in to Richard who offered to help go collect gas cans, drive my husband to get gas and back and help us make it home when we would’ve been stranded. What a solid kind hearted guy. Did not want anything in return. We will definitely come back here knowing what genuine good people work here.
Have a family reunion here every year. Hasn't changed since the 80's. Same decor, same payphone on the wall. Ok, the pool has changed. It's green and full of turtles. If we hadn't been coming here for 40 years I'd suggest going elsewhere
