Had the perfect weekend at High Country Campground in southwest Virginia. The location was ideal, as it was quiet and felt like we were getting away but was still close to the Creeper Trail, Whitetop Mountain, Elk Garden, the Appalachian Trail, and our favorite, Grayson Hylands State Park. The campground was very clean, well taken care of, sites were large with water and electric, and backed right up to the national forest so it was fun seeing deer walk through camp a few times. A gorgeous trail ran right behind our camp site which was wonderful. The apple orchard was gorgeous so we walked back there often to enjoy sitting on the deck and soaking in the mountain views. Bathrooms were close to camp, very clean, had flush toilets, and showers! The owner of the campground was incredibly nice and wildly helpful with giving us food and recreation ideas, as this was our first time to the area. Our experience at High Country Campground was so great that we plan to make the 5 hour trek back to spend some time in October.
What a GREAT fined!!! First off, Pete was an amazing host/owner of the campground. There are plenty of camping sites for everyone alike. Hikers, horse riders, rock climbers, and even hunters. Pete also has a camper you can rent. There are showers and flush toilets. The place backs up to National Forest for easy access. In the back camping area, there are big mature trees with tons of shade. Love this place. We will be back for sure
Had a wonderful short stay and plan to come back. Perfectly located between Grayson Highlands and the Creeper Trail. My site was tucked away and quiet. Host tidied up the restroom AM/PM. I’m an early riser and the bathroom had been wiped down and freshened up before I was there. At some point in the morning the fan was plugged in(it turns on with the light switch) and in the cooler evening it had been unplugged and the salt rock plugged in. These little touches make such a big difference. Nice hot shower at the end of a long hiking day and the WiFi to watch my favorite show, all appreciated. Beautifully maintained property and Pete was so personable and helpful!
An absolute gem in the Virginia high country! This quaint campground is located right off the AT and only a few minutes from Grayson Highlands State Park. The facilities are clean and showers are hot. There is also a communal building with games and the campground has WiFi. Pete, the owner, was very friendly and ensured we had everything we needed for a good stay.
My 14 yr. old daugher and I camped here Jan. 1-3. It was very cold (not above freezing), as expected. Pros: 1. Easy access to Grayson Highlands St. Park & other trails. The camp itself has a 2 mi. Bigfoot Trail that is a great shorter, not too strenuous hike if you want to just move a bit. 2. Very clean restrooms. 3. Pete the owner is very nice and helpful. He even let us borrow a tent heater (though we didn't use it) just in case it got too cold. Had coffee/cocoa available. 4. This time of year it was not crowded at all - we like not being right beside others when camping. 5. Accomodates tent, horse, and RV campers. 6. Quiet Cons: None. Just a recommendation that if you go this time of year you may want 4WD to be able to access all of the tent sites. We were glad we had it. We look forward to returning to High Country Campground!
