🛶 **Introduction / Overview: Your Isolated Retreat on Lake Vermilion**
For Minnesota outdoor enthusiasts, finding a truly secluded spot can be the pinnacle of a camping trip. **Hinsdale Island Campsite 9** delivers exactly that. Located on Hinsdale Island within the vast and beautiful **Lake Vermilion** near Tower, this site is one of a limited number of rustic, boat-in campsites managed by the state. It offers a genuine escape from the crowds and the noise of mainland campgrounds.
Lake Vermilion itself is a world-class destination, renowned for its excellent fishing, incredible size (over 40,000 acres), and the 365 islands that dot its surface. Campsite 9 embraces the classic Northwoods island camping experience: accessible only by watercraft, tucked away in the Kabetogama State Forest, and designed for self-sufficient campers who respect the natural environment.
The experience here is about maximizing solitude, featuring an isolated location distinct from other island campsites in the area. It is a rugged, yet rewarding, choice for those looking to combine the tranquility of island life with the adventure of navigating a major Minnesota waterway.

📍 **Location and Accessibility: Boat-In Camping near Tower, MN**
Hinsdale Island Campsite 9 is situated on Hinsdale Island in the eastern half of **Lake Vermilion**, a jewel of the Arrowhead Region of Northern Minnesota. The general area is geographically tied to:
Tower, MN 55790, USA
However, it is crucial for visitors to understand that this is a boat-in site. There is no land access to the campsite. Campers must transport all gear, tents, and supplies via a motorized boat, canoe, or kayak across the open waters of Lake Vermilion.
Access logistics:
Accessing the site typically begins from one of the public boat launches near Tower or Soudan, such as the Moccasin Point or McKinley Park area. The campsite's isolation is a key feature, as noted by previous users—it is positioned along a heavier traffic channel. While this channel provides convenient access to different parts of the lake, campers must be prepared for the occasional wakes and waves from passing boats.
The rocky shoreline, characteristic of Minnesota’s Shield Country, means boat landings require careful navigation. Campers often find numerous, albeit rocky, spots to pull up their watercraft, emphasizing the need for robust boat protection.

Choosing Hinsdale Island Campsite 9 is ideal for the dedicated Minnesota camper who prioritizes **seclusion and a true island experience**. It’s the perfect spot for those who view the journey as part of the adventure and are prepared for a rustic, self-contained stay. The fact that you are isolated from other campsites provides a rare peace that is hard to find in developed campgrounds.
The site is an exceptional choice for **serious boaters and anglers** who spend long days fishing and appreciate having a remote, non-public access point to return to. Good for kids
Site has a nice view. Unlike the sites on the opposite side of the bay you're isolated from other campsites. Problem is it's along a heavy traffic channel so there's good sized waves always crashing the back of your boat.
Isolated camp site; room for at least 3 tents. Trails going down both directions of the shoreline. There are numerous places to pull your boat up - but be prepared to scrape on some rocks. There is a channel right next to the site, so the occasional boat does blow by, creating some decent sized waves.
