**my visit to Hocking Hills: Grandma Gatewood's spirit** The air in Hocking Hills has a way of making you feel like you're stepping into another world. The towering trees, cascading waterfalls, and winding trails create an atmosphere that's both grounding and mystical. I came to explore the beauty of this place but left with a story I wasn’t expecting—one tied to the spirit of a remarkable woman: Grandma Gatewood. When I first heard about Grandma Gatewood, I thought her story was one of folklore. Emma "Grandma" Gatewood was a real person, a mother of 11, grandmother of 23, and the first woman to hike the Appalachian Trail solo, all at the age of 67. She’s a legend in these parts, and her connection to Hocking Hills runs deep. As I hiked the Old Man’s Cave trail, I couldn’t help but feel her presence. The locals say she’s still here, her spirit walking these trails, watching over them. The thought stayed with me as I followed the path she likely knew like the back of her hand. It’s said she came here often for solace and strength, long before she gained fame for her hiking feats. At night, I stayed at a small cabin near Ash Cave. That’s when the stories about her ghost came alive. A local I chatted with over dinner told me that hikers have reported hearing soft footsteps on trails where no one else is present, or catching glimpses of a woman in an old-fashioned dress with a determined stride. Some say she hums softly—a melody that blends with the rustling leaves. I didn’t see her, but I felt something, especially as I stood by Cedar Falls. It was a sense of resilience and calm, like an invitation to keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles. Whether it was her spirit or just the power of her story, I can’t say for sure, but I left Hocking Hills with a deep admiration for Grandma Gatewood and the trails she loved. If you visit, you might feel her too. She’s not a ghost to fear but one to inspire—a reminder that it’s never too late to chase dreams, conquer mountains, or walk your own path, one step at a time.
