This is a nice rest stop along the trail to Mt Wilson, and this also a nice place to camp on the trail. This place is also inside a thicket of oak trees.
Good place to take a rest after you hike up from lower winter creek trail. It’s mostly under the shadow so a good place to stop by. Lots of mosquitoes in the summer though. Winter is the best time as you can see winter creek for real!
Great trail! Going counter clockwise on the loop you will feel the steepest incline of the trail, until you reach the campground. Lots of shade.
So I ended up in Hoagees on a day that ended up pouring rain in March, so my experience may be different than yours. The home up is nice. There is some expectation gain so although you get exercise it is not a tough climb. The campground itself is pretty primitive, which is fine depending on your expectations. The bathrooms (pit toilets) are rough. They are at least 10 years past needing to be replaced. There is no way, but when we went the stream was flowing right next to camp. Water is good but obviously needs to be filtered. Peaceful location depending on the number of people. Wood fires were permitted when we were there. For being this close to LA, it is a nice place to take an entry level backpack without too much trouble. The scenery is very pretty. Do it as a day hike first then come back for an overnight. I think you'll enjoy.
Good place for an overnight camping trip! Avge 1.5 hr moderate hike fr Chantry Flats to get there.
