Advice: Looking at a map, you don't see that the ocean loop is an asphalt parking lot. You can't see the ocean from this asphalt jungle anyway. The better area is the lake side. Particularly the north end of the lake side. My 2 cents
First time I've been here and would definitely stay here again. I tent camped with my daughter for two nights. Felt the sites were a good size. Some reviews state that the sites are close together, which is true. We had our own space, but if you are looking for a private and quiet area away from people, this probably isn't the place for you. For us it was nice as there were plenty of families there when we stayed here, so my daughter was able to make friends and hang out with other kids. There is a small beach on Lake Macatawa right outside the entrance to the campground, which is nice if you want a quick swim or to avoid a bigger crowds down at the main beach. The main beach is just up the road about a mile and is easy to get to, even if you would bike down there. Bathrooms and showers were clean. Camp sites were clean and never saw any garbage from those who were camping there. There was even a strong storm system that moved through one morning we were there and still didn't see anything that blew around. There is a great shop just up the street you can walk to if you need anything. They have some fantastic ice cream there as well!
Not a great state park. Location is the best part. The sites are tiny and on top of each other. No privacy. It's super crowded. No full hookups, only electric. All dirt and sand, and not level. 200 sites and only two bathrooms, with 3 toilets each, means a waiting line EVERY time. Lots of kids, so the bathrooms are filthy. Although they do clean twice a day. The fairgrounds and an RV park down the road are better choices.
Great park and bike trails. Beach is awesome for sunsets too. Lady host camper is rude, just avoid her and you'll be fine
So the shop is super cute, but the bathrooms need a major change. Not nearly enough toilets and the changing stalls have zero privacy, no curtains or doors or anything 🙄 so they are just wasted space since no one ever uses them. The beach is great tho. The trails that bring you to the water could be longer though, it only gets you about half way. And if you are trying to get to the pier, the concrete has crumbled away and you have to climb down the broken concrete chunks to the sand and then climb up to the pier, so very much not wheelchair friendly. Great views and fishing once you are up there tho! Also, dogs are not allowed on the sand, so keep that in mind if you have a fur baby. Day passes are 20$ if you don't have the parks and recreation tag on your license plate
