🎣 Holter Dam Campground: Montana's Gateway to the Legendary Missouri River
For Montanans, the Missouri River is more than just a waterway; it's a vital artery of history, recreation, and some of the finest trout fishing on the continent. Situated at the base of the impressive Holter Dam and the southern end of Holter Lake, **Holter Dam Campground**, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), offers a spectacular and affordable entry point to this legendary landscape. This isn't just a place to park your RV; it's a front-row seat to the beauty of Central Montana, blending rugged scenery with highly accessible recreation.
Local users consistently praise the campground for its **cleanliness and outstanding location**, offering an ideal base for activities ranging from photography to world-class fishing. The atmosphere here is centered around the rhythm of the river, with the sounds of the water and the frequent sightings of deer right within the camping loops. It provides the essential, no-frills camping experience that many Montanans prefer—clean sites, good facilities, and unparalleled access to the outdoors, all while remaining highly budget-friendly, especially with a National Parks Pass. Whether you’re a serious angler hoping to catch the famous rainbow trout that thrive below the dam or a family looking to launch a boat onto Holter Lake, this BLM site near Wolf Creek is a classic Big Sky Country destination.
🗺️ Location and Accessibility Near Wolf Creek, Montana
Holter Dam Campground is uniquely positioned in a scenic canyon setting along the Missouri River, approximately one mile below the Holter Dam structure. The address places it near the small, historic community of **Wolf Creek, MT 59648**. This location is easily accessible, as it’s only a short drive west off Interstate 15 (I-15) between Helena and Great Falls, making it a convenient destination for residents across Central Montana.
To reach the campground, travelers will exit I-15 and follow the well-marked local roads toward the dam site. The access road (Holter Dam Rd) is generally paved or well-maintained gravel, suitable for all vehicle types, including larger RVs and trailers. Customer Reviews
A nice clean campground. 20.00 a night, half price with national parks passes. Free in winter *after November 30. No potable water right now. Good bathrooms. Lots of wildlife photography options, the deer were right in camp. The rainbow trout were going nuts at dawn and dusk, on nightcrawlers with a bobber on this trip lol.
Beautiful outside of there and nice lake
Awesome trout fishing
Great place to camp or fish. Great views and plenty of wildlife on the mountain such as eagles, deer, elk, mountain goats, fox etc...
Very nice and clean. Can now hook water hose to RV to fill. All camp sites have shelter over tables.
