For Minnesotans tackling the iconic **Superior Hiking Trail (SHT)**, finding a dependable and scenic spot to rest is paramount. **Horseshoe Ridge Camp** is one such essential stop, offering a welcome retreat for thru-hikers and weekend backpackers alike. Located directly on the SHT near the vibrant North Shore community of Silver Bay, this campsite provides a true backwoods experience in the rugged, beautiful terrain that defines this world-class trail.
The campsite is managed as a free, primitive, first-come, first-served backcountry site—a hallmark of the SHT experience. It is specifically designed to be easily accessible yet rugged, maintaining the wilderness feel that thousands of local users seek. Its location on a ridge hints at its elevation and potential for interesting topography, providing a naturally secluded atmosphere.
As a popular trail stop, Horseshoe Ridge Camp is a place where hikers share stories and enjoy the camaraderie of the trail, all while immersed in the spectacular Northwoods environment. Reviews highlight its status as a "Nice backwoods campsite," and specifically mention its **seclusion from the wind**, a crucial feature given the sometimes-harsh North Shore weather. While it demands preparation due to its primitive nature—including navigating some natural obstacles like rocks and roots—it remains a highly valued and frequently used point along Minnesota's favorite long-distance trail. It's an authentic slice of the SHT journey, complete with the challenges and rewards of true wilderness travel.
**Location and Accessibility: A Hike-In Only Destination**
Horseshoe Ridge Camp is situated within the expansive, publicly managed lands that host the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT).
The site's general location is identified as: **Superior Hiking Trail, Silver Bay, MN 55614, USA**.
It is crucial for users to understand that this is a **hike-in only** backcountry campsite. There is no direct vehicle access. Hikers must reach the camp by hiking a segment of the Superior Hiking Trail from one of the designated trailheads near Silver Bay. The accessibility will depend entirely on which trailhead is used as a starting point, and the mileage can vary significantly. Potential entry points might include trailheads located off of Lake County Road 5 (Lax Lake Road) or others near Silver Bay, which provide access to this section of the SHT.
The trails leading to the camp are typical of the SHT: rugged, often rocky, and involving elevation changes as they navigate the ridges and ravines of the North Shore highlands. Campers must carry all their necessary gear and supplies. The site is located near a stream, which offers "Stream nearby for water," though, like all natural water sources in the backcountry, this water must be filtered or chemically treated before consumption. Visitors should confirm the exact mileage from their intended trailhead before beginning their hike.

Good for kids
I enjoyed camping here recently, but the site has sharp rocks that are buried in the ground and some sites a lot of tree roots in the way. Be very careful or you could put a hole in your backpacking air bed like me. Otherwise it's a lovely campsite.
Nice backwoods campsite. Fairly secluded from the wind. Fire ring benches need a little maintenance. Stream nearby for water. There is no vegetation cover, so it is a bit muddy. Was here in the fall. Very few bugs, but the ones we did get were cool to watch by the headlamp.
Sheltered campsite that is equally good for tents or hammocks, water source is unreliable when season is dry, you may have to pack water from Manitou river or caribou river.
Want a preview of heaven? Hike into this place from the Caribou River.
A very rocky campsite but the next site is quite a distance away.
