Huntersville Forest Campground Introduce
For many of us Minnesotans, the call of the wild means truly disconnecting, embracing the simplicity of nature, and creating multi-generational memories. Huntersville Forest Campground, nestled in the heart of the Huntersville State Forest near Menahga, embodies this spirit perfectly. It’s not your typical amenity-rich RV park; instead, it offers a raw, authentic camping experience that has captured the hearts of families for years, becoming a cherished part of their traditions.
This campground is a testament to the fact that sometimes, less is truly more. As one enthusiastic long-time visitor eloquently put it, "This campground is wonderful!!! No electric, plumbing or almost no cell phone service! My family has been coming here for years!! Great for tubing down the river!! We have 3 generations at this campground!! It's also part of my Finnish heritage!!!" This sentiment speaks volumes about the deep connection many have to this rustic haven, a place where the focus shifts from screens and schedules to campfires, river adventures, and genuine connection.
Huntersville Forest Campground is managed by Itasca State Park and is considered "primitive," meaning it provides basic necessities to get back to nature. While it offers a unique opportunity for an unplugged experience, it's worth noting that its popularity can lead to bustling periods, and some visitors have reported issues with loud neighbors, particularly in group sites. However, for those who seek a truly immersive forest camping experience, with ample opportunities for river recreation and direct access to vast trail systems, Huntersville remains a beloved "wonderful campsite" where traditions are made and nature is embraced.
Huntersville Forest Campground is located at 35550 Campsite Dr, Menahga, MN 56464, USA. This places it deep within the Huntersville State Forest, a vast and wild expanse of natural beauty in Wadena County, near the charming town of Menahga. The campground's location is a significant part of its appeal, offering a true "get away from it all" experience.
Access to the campground is typically via well-maintained county roads, though as it's within a state forest, some sections might be gravel or less developed than main highways. Menahga itself is situated off US-71, a major north-south highway in central Minnesota, making the campground relatively accessible despite its rustic nature.
For those driving from major Minnesota cities:
From Minneapolis-St. Paul: The drive is approximately 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes, covering around 160-180 miles northwest. This makes it a feasible destination for a longer weekend or week-long camping trip.
From Duluth: The journey would be longer, approximately 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes west, about 150-170 miles.
From Park Rapids: Huntersville Forest Campground is quite close, typically a short 15-20 minute drive east, approximately 10-15 miles.
The remote nature contributes to the "almost no cell phone service" experience, which for many, is precisely the point of a trip here. While the address implies a specific street, it's important to remember that within a state forest, signage and navigation might be more rustic. Visitors should pay close attention to directions and perhaps have a physical map or downloaded directions, especially if relying on GPS in an area with limited cell reception. This location truly immerses you in the heart of Minnesota's natural landscapes, providing direct access to the Crow Wing River and extensive forest trails.
Huntersville Forest Campground offers a truly rustic and "primitive" camping experience, focusing on basic necessities for enjoying the natural environment. It's important to set expectations accordingly, as this is not a campground with modern amenities.
Campsites (No Hookups): The campground provides designated campsites, each typically consisting of a cleared area, a fire ring, and a picnic table. Crucially, there is "no electric, plumbing," meaning sites do not offer water, electric, or sewer hookups. Campers must be self-sufficient with their own water supply and waste management.
Vault Toilets: Basic "latrine style toilets" (vault toilets) are available on-site for restroom facilities.
Drinking Water: While no individual site hookups exist, there are often shared "water spigots" or wells available at the campground for obtaining fresh drinking water.
Trash Cans: Trash receptacles are provided, encouraging campers to keep the area clean and "pack it in, pack it out" or dispose of waste properly.
First-Come, First-Served: Campsites are generally available on a "first-come, first-served basis," meaning reservations are typically not accepted. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a site. Fees are collected on-site.
Managed by Itasca State Park: While located in Huntersville State Forest, the campground is managed by Itasca State Park, which may influence rules and maintenance standards.
Pet-Friendly: Pets are generally allowed in the campsites, following standard leash laws and responsible pet ownership guidelines.
It's essential for visitors to come prepared for a truly unplugged experience, bringing all necessary supplies and being ready for a minimalist approach to camping. This focus on basic services is part of what makes Huntersville Forest Campground a unique and appealing destination for those seeking an authentic outdoor adventure.
Authentic Rustic Camping: The most defining feature is its genuinely primitive nature. With "no electric, plumbing or almost no cell phone service," it offers a rare opportunity to truly disconnect from modern distractions and immerse oneself in the wilderness. This appeals to those seeking an escape from more developed campgrounds.
Ideal for River Tubing and Canoeing: Located directly on the Crow Wing River, the campground is "Great for tubing down the river!!" and serves as an excellent launch point for canoeing and kayaking. The Crow Wing River is renowned as one of Minnesota's best "wilderness" canoe routes, offering "remarkably clear" water, "sandy beaches," and "intermittent rapids" that are exciting but not dangerous. Shuttle services might be available from local outfitters for river trips.
Extensive Trail System Access: Huntersville State Forest boasts "over 150 miles of logging trails" open to hikers, drivers, ATV/OHV enthusiasts, and dirt bike riders. Designated routes for off-highway motorcycles (59 miles of single-track), Class 1 & 2 ATVs, and even equestrian trails (18 miles) make it a paradise for motorized and non-motorized trail users. Snowmobiling is also popular in the winter.
Family Tradition and Finnish Heritage: For many, this campground is deeply woven into family history, with multiple generations returning year after year. The mention of "Finnish heritage" highlights the cultural connection some families have to this land, adding a unique layer of personal significance to the experience.
Quiet and Secluded (Generally): While a reviewer noted issues with loud neighbors in a group site, the overall design and intended purpose of the campground is to be "quiet" and secluded. This makes it a generally peaceful retreat for those who respect the natural environment and other campers.
Wildlife Viewing and Fishing: The surrounding forest and the Crow Wing River offer opportunities for observing local wildlife and fishing. The river is known to hold various fish species, including walleye, Northern Pike, and bass.
Managed by DNR/Itasca State Park: Being managed by the Minnesota DNR (via Itasca State Park) means it adheres to state forest regulations and conservation efforts, preserving its natural integrity.
For inquiries regarding Huntersville Forest Campground, as it is managed by the Minnesota DNR (specifically Itasca State Park, according to some sources), contacting the DNR's general information line or the Itasca State Park office would be the most effective approach. Direct phone numbers for individual primitive campgrounds are not always available.
Address: 35550 Campsite Dr, Menahga, MN 56464, USA
Phone: (218) 699-7251 (This number is listed for Huntersville Forest Landing Campground on Explore Minnesota, often used interchangeably for this location, which is part of Huntersville State Forest.)
Other useful contacts for state forest information:
Minnesota DNR Information Center: (651) 296-6157 or Toll-Free: (888) 646-6367
It is crucial to remember that this is a first-come, first-served campground, so direct reservations are generally not possible. Contacting the DNR or checking their website for the Huntersville State Forest section would provide the most up-to-date information on fees (around $15-$17 per site per night), current conditions, and any alerts. Given the limited cell service, it's advisable to gather all necessary information before heading out.
For us Minnesotans, Huntersville Forest Campground isn't just another camping spot; it's an invitation to experience the core of what "Up North" truly means. It’s exceptionally suitable for locals because it caters to a specific, cherished kind of outdoor adventure: the unplugged, multi-generational, and authentically rustic getaway that defines so many of our family traditions.
We understand the value of leaving behind the incessant pings of cell phones and the glare of screens. This campground, with its "no electric, plumbing or almost no cell phone service," provides that rare opportunity to truly disconnect. It’s a place where the crackle of a campfire, the sounds of the forest, and laughter echoing from a tubing trip down the Crow Wing River replace the digital noise. For families who have been coming for "3 generations," this isn't just a place to camp; it's a living archive of shared memories, a connection to "Finnish heritage," and a space where new stories are born. This deep-rooted tradition is something only locals can truly appreciate.
Beyond the digital detox, the sheer abundance of outdoor activities right at our fingertips makes it a perfect fit. The Crow Wing River is a local favorite for tubing, canoeing, and fishing, offering clear waters and exciting (but safe) rapids. And for those with ATVs, OHVs, dirt bikes, or even snowmobiles in winter, the "over 150 miles of logging trails" in Huntersville State Forest are an irresistible draw. This is our backyard playground, offering endless opportunities for exploration and adventure that are deeply embedded in our state's outdoor culture.
While some might find the primitive nature challenging or encounter occasional noisy neighbors, these are often minor trade-offs for the genuine wilderness experience. Huntersville Forest Campground serves as a reminder that the best Minnesota adventures don't always require lavish amenities; sometimes, all you need is a fire ring, a picnic table, a beautiful river, and the vast, welcoming embrace of our state forest. It’s a place where you can create lasting bonds and immerse yourself in the natural heritage that defines being a Minnesotan.

This campground is wonderful!!! No electric, plumbing or almost no cell phone service! My family has been coming here for years!! Great for tubing down the river!! We have 3 generations at this campground!! It's also part of my Finnish heritage!!!
Wonderful campsite, wish the Rangers/Sheriff would swing through at least once an evening, had 2 nights of obnoxiously loud neighbors in the group site (yes we asked them nicely to at least turn it down at 10pm, no they didn't listen).
Great camping, can't wait to come back with my dirt bike!
Quiet and clean. Perfect place and time to get away!
Fun place to go camping, kayaking, and canoeing. Lots of people like to go tubing here as well. There's a rope swing set up over the river which can be fun for kids. Around supper time a guy drove around delivering firewood to campers for $5 a bundle. Overall a nice place to spend a weekend, but not enough stuff to keep me around for much longer than that.
