Customer Reviews
Was a very nice camp ground. Bathrooms were clean. The only issue we had was our campsite was completely infested with termites site six on the lower loop. When we first arrived, they were just swarming and flying everywhere. Not a big deal just quite annoying. The beach is very nice. The hike to lighthouse is very nice except for the relentless flies but hey, what are you gonna do about flies? All in all it was very nice.
Fantastic campsites close to Lake Superior. We had 3 sites and were just a few yards from the lake. You’ll be able to fall asleep listening to the waves. The sunset and sunrise were amazing. The hike to the Au Sable Lighthouse is nice and you can see the skeletons of wooden shipwrecks. There are lots of views of the lake. The lighthouse and surrounding buildings are worth the hike.
Disclaimer: we didn't actually camp here, though it seemed like a nice, quiet place to go for that. We parked nearby and took the trail out to the Au Sable Light Station, and spent a little time where the Hurricane River flows into Superior, as well. We saw people parked in the lot right off H-58, and assumed that was the place to go. There's actually another lot closer to the campground that would've saved us a handful of steps. The trail out to the Light Station is wide enough for a car and covered with chipped rocks, and also fairly flat; even though it's about 1.5 miles from the campground to the Station, it's not an awful walk. The river also seemed like an enjoyable place for kids to play in the water.
One of my favorite camp grounds! The sites are spaced out pretty well so you get some privacy from other campers. The Upper sites are a bit more of a trek down to the beach/trail, but it still is pretty close! The lower sites you may have more travelers passing by due to backpackers but I've never been bothered by them/it. Lots of trails to explore, the beach is nice, the quiet hours are reasonable. The toilets aren't bad but please remember to close the lid when not in use! Helps the smells. Only downside is the flies that get in there.
Fantastic campsite right up from Lake Superior. We stayed at the Lower section which is just steps from the water. You’ll be able to fall asleep listening to the waves crash on the beach. You have easy beach access here and then also access to the North Country Trail which from this campground is just a short venture to the Au Sable Lighthouse. Other hiking and overlook sites are a short drive away.
Really nice rustic campground. You get to fall asleep to the sound of the waves every evening. There's lots of views just a short hike away, including an amazing lighthouse! There's plenty of space between each campsite so there's a bit of privacy as well.
