Idlewild Campground Introduce
🌲 Introduction / Overview
For Oregonians drawn to the quiet, rugged beauty of the high desert and the sprawling forests of the Malheur National Forest, Idlewild Campground offers an essential, tranquil escape. Located north of Burns in Eastern Oregon, this Forest Service campground is the epitome of secluded, clean, and comfortable camping—without the high costs or crowded sites found elsewhere.
Idlewild Campground is situated at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet, nestled within a large stand of towering Ponderosa pines. This setting provides ample shade and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere, a welcome change from the open desert landscape nearby. The campground was originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, lending it a sense of history and classic design.
It caters primarily to those who appreciate a no-frills, nature-focused experience. Customers consistently highlight its spacious, private camp spots and the exceptionally high standard of cleanliness for its facilities, especially the vault toilets. This is the ideal destination for campers who seek solitude, a base for hiking and biking, or a clean stopover while exploring the expansive Malheur National Forest and the surrounding Harney County region.
📍 Location and Accessibility
Idlewild Campground is located in the beautiful, vast landscape of the Malheur National Forest, making it a gateway to the spectacular, remote areas of Eastern Oregon.
The official address provided is: John Day-Burns Hwy, Burns, OR 97720, USA. More specifically, the campground is easily accessible just off US Highway 395 north of the city of Burns, Oregon, often described as being about a 30-minute drive from the town. Its proximity to a major highway ensures straightforward access for all vehicle types, including smaller RVs and trailers (though campers should note the maximum vehicle length limit of 30 feet to ensure comfortable maneuvering).
While the campground itself does not feature major natural attractions like large lakes or waterfalls, its location serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the wider region. It is a short drive from Burns, which provides necessary services, and places campers perfectly to explore nearby attractions such as the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the rugged Steens Mountain Recreation Area, and the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness area within the Malheur National Forest itself. Additionally, the Devine Summit Trail begins right within the campground, offering immediate recreational access.

Idlewild Campground is an undeniable choice for the Oregon camper looking to truly disconnect and save money. If your primary goal is a clean, secure, private, and quiet camping experience in a beautiful forest setting, all for the minimal cost of $10 a night, this is the place to be.
It is worth choosing for tent campers, small RV owners, and travelers self-contained for dry camping who prioritize an affordable base camp over luxury amenities. It’s perfect for those who find their own entertainment in the outdoors—such as birding, hiking the gentle trails, or simply enjoying a campfire under the stars in a remote, quiet location. It serves as an excellent, inexpensive staging point for hunters in the fall and snowmobilers in the winter.
While it is not the place to go if you expect full RV hookups, showers, or major, overwhelming natural attractions directly on site (like massive waterfalls or lakes), its comfort, immaculate vault toilets, forested seclusion, and the incredible $10 fee make it a standout, high-value option for the ruggedly independent camper exploring the treasures of Eastern Oregon's Malheur National Forest.

Customer Reviews
Isolated and comfortable camping location. Decent birds. Excellent facilities and spacious. No water features or major natural attractions to keep you entertained.. besides the gentle trails nearby. Great place to stay if you enjoy a clean and calm campsite for its own merits, but dont expect to be overwhelmed by activities or natural beauty.
Loved this place. So quiet. Very clean vault toilets. Water available for drinking. $10.00 a night. Private camp spots.
We camped here on a whim while traveling through the area, as a part of our circle tour of the country. What a GEM! We loved the ponderosa trees (they are huge!) and it was so quiet. Not a lot to do in the area, but a nice hiking trail starts from the campground, and the solitude can hardly be beat!
Idlewild campground Nice campground with good spacing between sites. Good loop trail to hike. Very clean bathrooms tho in need of paper. Big fire ring and picnic table at each site. We have a 22’ truck @ a 24’ trailer and had no problem finding a site at 5 pm. Several pull thru sites available. A little big truck highway noise at night but a great spot to spend the evening and a lazy morning.
Quiet and clean. Bathrooms were well kept. Note: The sites are just off of US 395, so there is some traffic noise. The noise level is very low as the road isn't very busy. Look for spots at around the entrance to lower the noise even more. Overall a great little campground.
