Indian Mounds Campground - Sabine National Forest Introduce
For Texans seeking a genuine, unplugged wilderness experience that still provides essential comforts, the **Indian Mounds Campground** in the heart of the **Sabine National Forest** is a cherished retreat. This is not your typical RV park; it’s a rustic, natural getaway nestled on the shores of the massive **Toledo Bend Reservoir**—the largest man-made body of water in the South. Managed and operated by the Sabine River Authority of Texas, this recreation area offers a blend of pristine East Texas pineywoods, rich history, and incredible water access that has made it a favorite for generations of Texas families.
The atmosphere at Indian Mounds is one of deep-rooted tradition and peaceful relaxation. It’s a place where families, like one that has been camping here for over 40 years and even chose the lakeside for a wedding, come to reconnect with nature and each other. The focus is on the simple joys of outdoor life: fishing, boating, and relaxing by the fire, away from the hustle of city living. The campground is named for the unique geological formations found nearby, adding a layer of natural intrigue to your exploration.
---
Indian Mounds Campground is located deep within the scenic **Sabine National Forest** in East Texas, offering a truly forested and lakeside escape. The campground's address—**F Rd 130, Hemphill, TX 75948, USA**—places it just a short drive from the small town of Hemphill and conveniently positioned on the Texas side of the immense Toledo Bend Reservoir, which forms a significant part of the Texas-Louisiana border.
For Texans traveling from the major metropolitan areas, the location is a secluded but manageable drive. It’s an ideal destination for those in the Pineywoods region and a worthwhile trek for Houston or Dallas residents seeking true waterfront camping without the coastal traffic. Access is typically via a turn off Highway 83 east of Hemphill and then onto Forest Service Road 130. While the setting is rustic, the roads leading to the area are generally well-marked, and the in-camp roads are designed to accommodate campers, though one should always be prepared for National Forest driving conditions. Being on Toledo Bend means the primary draw is the water—perfect for fishing and boating enthusiasts who appreciate easy access to the reservoir's vast expanse.

The experience at Indian Mounds Campground is intentionally rustic and focused on the essentials of outdoor living. It operates under a unique arrangement: owned by the US Forest Service (Sabine National Forest) and meticulously maintained by the **Sabine River Authority of Texas (SRA-TX)**. This dedication to stewardship ensures the facilities remain clean and functional, despite the lack of full luxury hookups found in many private RV parks.
- **Spacious Campsites:** Sites are generally good sized, level, and well-spaced, accommodating both **RV and tent camping**. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a fire ring/grill for cooking and gathering.
 - **Water Access:** Potable **water spigots** are available in certain areas or on the camping loops, though not directly at every individual site. Campers should be prepared to bring a water jug to fill up.
 - **Waste Management:** The SRA-TX does a great job of ensuring a tidy environment by regularly **emptying trash bins daily**, which is a vital service in a natural setting.
 - **Restroom Facilities:** The campground provides **bathrooms** (described as pit or vault toilets) which the staff works hard to keep clean and stocked. Note that, consistent with a rustic National Forest setting, there are typically no showers on site.
 - **Host/Staff Presence:** While not a commercial resort, the area is monitored and maintained by the SRA-TX staff, who are commended in reviews for their efficiency and dedication to upkeep.
 - **Long-Term Stays:** The campground often allows for extended stays, with a **14-day camping limit** for most sites, and selected sites allowing stays up to **28 days**, perfect for Texans wanting a prolonged fishing or relaxation retreat.

Indian Mounds Campground’s features are centered on its unparalleled location within the national forest and on Toledo Bend Reservoir. The highlights are nature itself and the simple, classic amenities that support a rich outdoor lifestyle.
- **Lakeside Views:** Many campsites offer direct, lovely **views of the lake**, enhancing the tranquility of the stay. Guests are encouraged to find a spot near the water to experience the full beauty of the reservoir.
 - **Boat Dock and Ramps:** A key feature for anglers and boaters is the **nice boat dock** and **two boat ramps** that provide easy access to the Toledo Bend Reservoir. This vast lake is renowned for bass fishing.
 - **Wildlife Viewing:** The natural setting is a haven for wildlife. Guests frequently spot local fauna, including **large turtles enjoying the sun on logs** and various bird species. Be aware, as one customer noted, the deep woods are home to animals like **wild hogs** (sometimes with little babies!), reminding visitors to be wildlife-aware.
 - **Hiking Opportunities:** Visitors can **hike to the Indian Mounds** for which the campground and recreation area are named, providing a natural exploration of the surrounding forest and a connection to the area's history.
 - **Natural Tranquility:** The heavily forested location, often described as quiet and peaceful, offers a true respite. The presence of towering pines and hardwoods provides excellent shade and a deeply natural environment.
 - **Fishing and Relaxation Focus:** The primary highlights are the opportunities to **fish, camp, and relax with the family**. This is a place for unwinding, making it an East Texas favorite for generations.

The Indian Mounds Campground is worth choosing because it represents the heart of traditional Texas outdoor heritage, particularly for those in the East Texas region. It is a genuine National Forest experience—simple, beautiful, and deeply connected to the water. The compelling draw is not a list of luxurious amenities, but the **unparalleled access to Toledo Bend** for fishing and boating, combined with the peaceful, tree-shaded campsites. The sheer size of the spots, complete with picnic tables and fire rings, allows families to spread out and create their perfect camp base.
Furthermore, the high standard of maintenance by the **Sabine River Authority** is a major benefit. Knowing that the bathrooms are kept clean and stocked and that trash bins are emptied daily ensures that the rustic experience remains comfortable and sanitary. For those who value the sounds of the forest, the water views, the chance to spot natural wildlife (even the occasional startled wild hog!), and a family-friendly atmosphere that has fostered decades of cherished memories—including weddings by the water—Indian Mounds Campground is truly the quintessential choice for an authentic, relaxing Texas escape.

Customer Reviews
The spots are good size with picnic tables. Many with view of lake. There is nice boat dock. No power, water spickets in certain areas to access. Be aware wild hogs come up to camp areas one had 3 little babies startled me at first lol. Alot of large turtles enjoying sun on log and birds that seem to have their spots too. Overall I loved it there.
My family and I love it here. My wife and her family have been camping here for the past 40 years... My wife and I even got married out here right next to the lake! The Sabine River Authority does a great job keeping the bathrooms clean and stocked while also emptying the trash bins daily. Come out to the Mounds if you're looking for a great place to fish, camp, and relax with the family!
Decent campground. There are only a handful of waterfront sites at this one but the rest aren't all that bad. They do have what appears to be new vault toilets. That is appreciated. There were running water at some sites, we just ran a water hose over from an adjacent site. No electricity at this campground. We were down in October to find east texas salamanders and do a little bank fishing. Very enjoyable trip. Be prepared, the nearest civilization (Hemphill) is around 30 minutes away. We will definitely be back another day.
Nice “State Park-style” campground…campsite’s immediately adjacent to each other. No fire rings or grills, just picnic table and lantern pole, but also no fees right now. Saw one site with running H20, toilet and trash bins are on site. Few sites right on the water (first to be taken) and free boat ramp adjacent to camp. Caught couple fish to eat from camp…bonus! Mixed hardwood/piney woods are pretty. Crows scavenged everything left on the picnic table while we slept…tortillas, buns, catfish bait, bag of peanuts, and powder creamer! Most bass fisherman launching boats are tools, but nothing new, lol. This lake is friggin Huge!! Snag 1 or 2 adjacent sites for privacy, 😜
We took our grand boys fishing had such a great time this is a nice park no fees and we played the keeper game whoever called first fish that was a keeper got $10 had a lot of fun nice area we will be back
