My wife and I absolutely LOVE coming up to Iron Springs for day camps just a short drive from Montrose. We went up there today to see the aspens change for the fall and 99.99% was absolutely great. Unfortunately, someone without any care for others, has went through the park and destroyed most of the tables. If anyone knows any kind of organization I can donate too, to help fix them, I would also donate my time. I'll show these pictures to the forest service people tomorrow. Maybe we can get some people together to fix them. And hope nobody does it again I guess. I only took a picture of 3 out of 5 or 6 that were damaged. Horrible that anyone would find entertainment out of that.
The drive in from Nucla was rough. I hope they've developed the road since then (stayed here 8/2023). I drove a subaru wilderness and was worried at points it wouldn't clear it. Got there eventually and it was a peacful spot with only 1 couple across at another spot. Vault toilet was fine. It was pretty cool at night/morning, I recommend a good insulating sleeping pad; I only brought a mod-grade inflating pad and it deflated. Sites have rings and benches. Some sites require a little cleanup from former campers. No cell service up here - back up info before you head out. I liked it here among the aspen. It was really close to Montrose regional airport so we stayed here the night before flying out.
No services of course but has a pit toilet. Only reason for 4 stars is the pit toilet is ROUGH. Campground overall is great, would come back here again.
One of my all time favorite places to camp. Been camping at this spot for over thirty years
Beautiful and peaceful campground where we met some lovely women to hang out with. It looked like there were around 10 campsites. Each had their own fire pit and picnic table. It's was probably 20° cooler than Montrose, and its on the rim rocker!
