Jerniman's Campground Introduce
**đď¸ Introduction / Overview: Your Island Home Base on Ocracoke**
For North Carolina campers and RV enthusiasts, Ocracoke Island represents the quintessential Outer Banks getawayâa place defined by pristine beaches, a historic village, and an unhurried pace of life. **Jerniman's Campground** is a key component of this experience, offering a unique, amenity-rich, and conveniently located place to stay on this cherished island. Situated at the edge of the vibrant Ocracoke Village, this family-friendly campground has positioned itself as the practical choice for visitors who prioritize **convenience and essential services** during their island adventure. It is often noted as the closest private accommodation to the ocean, offering a pragmatic option for those wanting more than the rustic, hookup-free experience of the nearby National Park Service campground.
Jerniman's is designed to cater primarily to RVs and campers, providing the necessary hookups and facilities to ensure a comfortable stay while embracing the relaxed, coastal atmosphere. The experience here is characterized by the warmth of **genuine Southern hospitality**, exemplified by staff who are consistently praised for being attentive, kind, and going "above and beyond" to ensure guest satisfaction. While island life has its quirksâwhich may include sites that are cozy or water with a distinct flavorâJerniman's delivers where it matters most: a strategic location, functional amenities, and a commitment to resolving issues with a personal touch that transforms a simple stay into a memorable experience. It's the perfect spot to set up camp before diving into all that Ocracoke Village and its stunning surrounding beaches have to offer.

**đşď¸ Location and Accessibility: Steps from the Village Action**
The location of Jerniman's Campground is arguably its greatest asset for local North Carolina users seeking easy access to Ocracoke Village life. Situated at **990 Irvin Garrish Highway, Ocracoke, NC 27960**, the facility is centrally located right at the entrance to the main village area. This means you are within walking or a very short bike or golf cart distance of many of the islandâs most popular shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the historic Ocracoke Lighthouse.
Accessibility to the island itself requires a ferry ride, either from Hatteras (free) or from Cedar Island or Swan Quarter (reservations highly recommended and paid). Once on the island, Jerniman's sits directly off the main road, making it easy to find immediately upon arrival. Critically, the campground is noted for being the **closest village accommodation to the ocean access roads**, lying less than a half-mile shy of the first public beach entrance. While a vehicle is typically still needed to cover the distance to the main Lifeguard Beach area, the short hop is made easy, especially with the use of rented transportation. The compact nature of the village surrounding the campground eliminates the need for constant driving once you are settled, a major benefit for an Outer Banks vacation.

**đŻ What is Worth Choosing Jerniman's Campground**
Choosing **Jerniman's Campground** is worthwhile for local North Carolina users who are seeking a highly practical, amenity-rich base camp for an Ocracoke vacation, especially if you travel in an RV or require hookups. The primary reason to choose Jernimanâs is its **unmatched combination of location and service**.
First, the **convenience** is paramount. Being at the very edge of the village means you can easily ditch your vehicleâa necessity on a small islandâand rely on a rented golf cart or your own two feet to explore shops, restaurants, and the iconic Ocracoke Lighthouse. No other full-service campground offers this proximity to the village core.
Second, the **full hookups** for RVs (including sewer on most sites) provide a level of comfort and utility that the more rustic National Park campground does not offer, making longer stays easier and more comfortable. While the campsite spacing can be close, reflecting the premium value of island land, the convenience of on-site amenities like the laundry room, private bathhouses, and adjacent gas/convenience store more than compensate.
Finally, the **reputation for exceptional customer service** is a critical differentiator. The willingness of the management to proactively assist guests, as highlighted in glowing testimonials, provides a sense of security and genuine hospitalityâa comforting thought when dealing with the unpredictable nature of island camping. For a stress-minimized, amenity-maximized Ocracoke experience with the friendliest faces around, Jerniman's Campground is the smart, local choice. Visitors should simply remember to bring their own drinking water if they dislike the taste of the local, heavily-treated supply and adhere to the **no open wood fire policy** (charcoal cooking in self-contained units is permitted) to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for all.

Customer Reviews
Campsites were so close together, I actually got spattered from neighbor cooking bacon! The bathrooms locks did not work and someone walked in while daughter was in shower. No mens/women's rooms, just several "private" rooms. No soap and one of the rooms had no light...shower in the dark. They SAY water is drinkable, but even after boiling water and making Mac n cheese, all we could taste is chlorine, so bring your own. We were the only tent campers except people who slept in car next to us. Looked like parking lot of rvs side by side. No bea h access, had to drive. No fires allowed. State park down road much better for next time
Amazing Stay at Jernimanâs Campground! We had a fantastic experience at Jernimanâs! The manager, Clayton, was incredibly kind and helpful. When our RV didnât get charged overnight, he personally looked into it and went above and beyond to make things rightâletting us stay an extra night for free and even providing a complimentary golf cart to help us get around the campground. The location is excellentâclose to everything in the village, which made it really convenient for dining and exploring. We couldnât have asked for better service or hospitality. Very happy we chose to stay here and will definitely be back. Highly recommend!
Access to Jerniman's is via a ferry which we took from Cedar Island. It is a small campground on Ocracoke Island. Entrance sign is difficult to see from the highway especially if traveling in a large motorhome. We were glad we had vetted the campground from google earth and street view. Site was plenty large enough for our 45 foot coach and our truck. Friends traveling with us stayed in the adjacent site and had sufficient room for their 40 foot coach and jeep. Surprisingly the water quality was great and tested soft. Hookups were convenient and power was good. Verizon signal very fast. All in all we enjoyed our stay here and hope we can return in the future! All restaurants are fabulous. We did not have a bad meal while here and we ate out everyday for dinner. Hint... Go early in the afternoon or early evening as they would become quite crowded. Ocracoke Island Lighthouse was a find but could not climb it as it is undergoing updates and repairs. Be sure to get the NPS Cape Hatteras National Seashore stamp at the NPS building. Don't forget to visit the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum/David Williams House within walking distance from the NPS building. There is so much to learn here about the early ancestors. Also talking to locals is a big help as they are so friendly and willing to talk. The British Cemetery is interesting as is the Doll tree. Smacknally's, Dajtio and Eduardo's are a much for some good chow. Eduardo's is closing his food trailer at the end of this season, there is a story about that! Hurricane Dorian in 2019 caused tremendous damage on the island but they are still recovering. The best sunset is on the tip of the island by the ferry terminal. Gorgeous!
Come quick this place feels up quick and for good reason. Great campground, golf cart rentals and the best buffet on the island. Hands down where you want to be đ¤đ¤đ¤
This place is awesome. The person in line in front of us when we checked in was asking to extend their stay because they liked it so much, and I considered doing the same. Located right at the entrance to the village, we rented one of their golf carts to explore and kept the tires aired down on the truck to go to the drive-on beach. Host is friendly, sites are larger than I expected, many of them on the perimeter. Road inside the campground is wide, making it easy to back your camper in. This is the only campground on the island with electric hookups that isn't seasonal-only. If you get a site with sewer, the connection is at the rear of the site, so bring extra sewer hoses if your connection is in the front. We can't wait to return!
