Without a doubt, one of the best car camping spots around. Visited in the late summer of 2022. The Dixie Fire had burned through the year prior and the campground had not fully recovered, as there was still major damage throughout. Nonetheless, I arrived midweek and had the place to myself. As others have said, the access road is part dirt. But with careful driving, I made it in with no problems (see pic of the car I drove). Right on the lake and nice sites. At the time, no potable water. Vault or porta potties only, but all sites have fire rings bear boxes, and picnic tables. There is a trail around the lake which is a great few hours walk. There is also the Mountain Harkness trail, which climbs about 1200 feet. But you are rewarded with amazing views in all directions and good cell coverage. Both are in the moderate level. If you are one who enjoys seclusion and off the beaten path camping, consider this.
First come first serve campsites. Easy access to lake on the north side. Bring your swim suit and kayaks. Lots of hiking spots near by. Sites farther away from the lake are more secluded. Last 5 miles of getting there is not paved. Luckily we survived with our Prius, but it was heart pounding. AWD is recommended.
This is our family's favorite place to camp! The campground is small and primitive, but very beautiful and peaceful. The sites are first come first serve, with 2 reservable group sites.
Juniper Lake is one of the best backpack trips I have ever done. I lived in Westwood many years ago and it was a great place to live..Need to get out of town? I do not remember a road that came anywhere close or any form of campground..long time ago but so well worth it. so beautiful and peaceful.never saw a human the few days I stayed. Fresh trout for breakfast..and free..was a good hike in .Highly recommended!
Lovely campgrounds with spacious camp sites, some right on the lake. Only 19 sites, first-come, first-served. Fairly rough road to get there, outhouses well stocked with TP and Purell. Convenient access to trailhead to hike up Harkness
