Kellner Campground Introduce
Hello, fellow Arizonans! If your group is seeking a tranquil and picturesque escape into the higher elevations of our beautiful state, away from the desert heat, then Kellner Campground near Globe is a destination well worth your consideration. This isn't your average drive-up site; it's a dedicated group campground nestled in the serene Pinal Mountains, offering a unique blend of rustic charm and peaceful seclusion. Described as "picturesque and peaceful," especially when the "stream was flowing pretty well," Kellner Campground provides a refreshing respite and a fantastic setting for group gatherings, outdoor education, or simply unwinding amidst nature.
For us locals, finding those cooler spots in the summer and enjoying the unique "sky island" environments that our mountains offer is a true Arizona treat. Kellner Campground, with its higher elevation, delivers on this, providing a welcome change in temperature and scenery. While it requires a bit of planning – it's a "fee area" with a "locked gate" requiring a reservation and code – the effort is entirely worthwhile. Imagine spreading out across well-spaced sites, enjoying a quiet night under the stars, and exploring a riparian area with a flowing stream. If your group is ready for a back-to-basics yet incredibly rewarding outdoor adventure in the Tonto National Forest, Kellner Campground offers a memorable experience.
Kellner Campground is situated in the Pinal Mountains, near Globe, AZ 85501, USA. It is specifically located within the Tonto National Forest, about 5 miles southwest of Globe. Reaching the campground requires navigating a specific route and having a reservation. Based on recent information, the "Russell Road is blocked off," so visitors coming from the Phoenix area or other western points need to "take the alternate route through Globe to get here."
From Globe, the directions involve following Jess Hayes Road southeast to the junction of Icehouse Canyon Road (Forest Road 112) and Six Shooter Canyon Road (Forest Road 222). Continue on Forest Road 112 for approximately 3 miles to the junction of Forest Road 55 and 112, then take the right fork and continue on Forest Road 55 for another 3 miles to the site. The campground itself is at the end of a gated, 3/4-mile-long road, providing a sense of privacy. Since it's a "fee area," you'll need to secure a reservation and obtain the lock code to access the gate. Parking is somewhat limited, accommodating up to "4-5 vehicles" or "five vehicles under 20 feet," as turning around with more vehicles or a large RV can be "tricky." This controlled access helps maintain the campground's peaceful environment. Its higher elevation means cooler temperatures, making it a particularly attractive destination for us Arizonans looking to escape the heat of the lower deserts.

Well-Spaced Sites: The individual camping areas within the group site are "well spread out," offering a sense of privacy even within a group setting.
Historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Features: Boasts unique "rock walls and steps built by the Civilian Conservation Corps" in the 1940s, adding a historical and architectural element to the natural setting.
Abundant Wildlife: Being within the Tonto National Forest and near game trails, the area is frequented by wildlife, offering opportunities for viewing various birds, chipmunks, squirrels, coatimundi, and coos whitetail deer.
Hiking and Exploration Opportunities: While a specific "Kellner canyon trailhead" might be tricky to locate, the area offers opportunities for "hiking, exploring, and wildlife viewing," with trails along the stream (though potentially "tricky"). The Pinal Mountain Trail System, including Kellner Canyon Trail (#242), is nearby.
Suitable for Small Trailers/SUVs: While turning around can be tricky, smaller vehicles and SUVs can fit, making it accessible for a variety of group transport.
Unique Group Experience: As a dedicated group site, it offers a more exclusive and private camping experience compared to individual public campgrounds.
Proximity to Globe Amenities: Despite its secluded feel, it's just a short drive from the City of Globe, offering access to restaurants, grocery stores, antique shops, and other conveniences.
Views of Pinal Mountains: Provides spectacular views of the Pinal Mountains, rising 3,500 feet above the site.
Best in Spring and Fall: Recommended as a prime destination during these seasons for optimal weather conditions and stream flow.

For us Arizonans, Kellner Campground offers a fantastic and highly suitable option for group camping, providing a unique blend of rustic serenity and mountain escape. We know the value of finding cooler temperatures during our hotter months, and Kellner's higher elevation in the Pinal Mountains delivers that perfectly, offering a "nice respite" from the desert heat. The "picturesque and peaceful" setting, especially with a "stream flowing pretty well" in spring, provides a refreshing change of scenery from our typical desert landscapes.
The fact that it's a dedicated group site means we can enjoy a private and exclusive experience with our friends, family, or organization, spread out among "well spread out" individual areas. While it requires the foresight to make a reservation and get a lock code, this controlled access helps maintain the campground's pristine condition and quiet atmosphere, which is something we truly appreciate. We're accustomed to packing in and packing out in our wild spaces, and the "no water or trash" policy here reinforces our commitment to Leave No Trace principles. From potential wildlife sightings to the unique CCC rock structures, Kellner Campground offers a genuine "back-to-basics" adventure that resonates with our love for Arizona's diverse and beautiful outdoors. It's truly a hidden gem for groups seeking tranquility and natural immersion right here in our backyard.

First off, this is a fee area, and the road is blocked unless you make a reservation and get the lock code. Making our way out to the campground from the Phoenix area, we found that Russell Road is blocked off. You need to take the alternate route through Globe to get here. Once you're there, it's picturesque and peaceful. When we went, the stream was flowing pretty well, so we made a small stone bridge to get across to the camping areas beyond the picnic area. In spring, fire danger is low, so you can build fires in designated pits at the picnic area and individual camp sites. That said, we could not locate the Kellner canyon trailhead, which appears to be next to the picnic area. The trail along the stream can be tricky, and I put my boots in the stream a couple of times, so be careful and remember to bring extra shoes just in case. It would be nice if more trails were available here. The road to the site has game trails where wildlife passes through. We found a lot of broken bottles but also found some old horse shoes and other old camping remnants from many years gone by. The site has a vault toilet, but no water or trash, so you need to pack it out and leave glass at home. Temps are a little cooler here because the elevation is higher than town. It's very quiet at night, and the sites are well spread out. This campground is a nice respite and worth staying at for a couple days. Enjoy!
This is an oddly laid out campground. It's a group site that you rent. Many little sure within the campground. Not a bad location, but the parking is the bad part. Our group had 2 small suvs and an RV. We fit, but i wouldn't expect more that 4-5 vehicles. (Turning around gets tricky with more vehicles there). Overall we liked it. We just didn't like it enough to go back.
The road to get into the campground is definitely not made for passenger vehicles, like sedans.
Very scenic.... Nice road conditions
Kellner campground is located in the pinal Peak mountains. kellner is a wonderful secluded place to camp or just spend the day having a picnic and enjoying the cool mountain scenery. When I went there was nobody close by and it was quiet and peaceful. It was so green and there was water running. The sound of the water was very peaceful. I would definitely would recommend this place for anybody who likes to camp surrounded by the woods and or who just want to enjoy nature and quiet. this place is also good to take pictures and videos.
