A really unique place to come enjoy the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains. Not much to do up here but enjoy the scenery and fish or hike. The campground seemed decent but the bathrooms weren't very nice. There was plenty of mosquitos as well so bring your bug spray and dress appropriately. The river flowing nearby has a lot of trout but can be difficult to catch if you are novice. Keep at it though and you may be rewarded with one of the Kern river golden trout.
This campsite is very easy to find and there is signage to direct you to the campsite. I believe there is about 20 campsite and overall each campsite is well spaced out. The time I went was mid December 2023 and barely have any snow during the time I stayed. I have to say it is very quiet and dark at night. You can see the stars really clear at night. The only down side during the time I went is bathroom and trash are closed. Which means I need to be prepared and pack my own trash. There is no bear storage locker so make sure to store your items in bear proof containers. The pct trail is right next to the campsite and there is a sign up sheet and sign there.
This is a hidden gem to say the least. The spots are dirt but they are pretty level and flat. There was plenty of room for several of us and is quickly shaded in the evening. The porta potty was also a nice touch. Clean and well maintained. Hard to believe this is a free place to camp. Skip the valley/river camping and get up there.
Stop by the General Store on the way in for a cold beer or a burger of the grill. Sit down and chat with all the PCT Thru-hikers. Stories for days! The campground is officially closed and no longer cared for by the Park Rangers but the gates are open and camping is welcome. Just pack in, pack out. Check out the sites located down very short dirt roads prior to entering the official campground.
This campground is very primitive so make sure you are self contained or bring all that you need if tent camping. Any trailers over 27 feet are going to struggle backing into a spot, be aware of that. Otherwise, it's a nice campground.
