We stayed at Campsite 1 and 2 and loved it. A few of our tents were on a slope, but it was OK. The closest bathrooms weren't clean, so we opted to walk to the restrooms by the picnic area on the way to Grant's tree. The water is safe to drink and we had a spicket in our campsite. We had a picnic table and a fire pit. The night stars were beautiful, and the squirrels were tiny and cute. The air was so clean. I'm already missing it!

The trees are great, that's not up for debate. The camp ground provides solid access to both Grant Grove and surrounding hikes. Depending on what hikes you pick, you may hike down first and then up at the end (like to Sequoia Lake in the photos), but drives to Hume Lake and Sandy Cove aren't far away. Our site (site 76 in Azalea) didn't have a real flat spot to snag, but plenty of sites did have flat spaces, and there were plenty of restrooms around the grounds. Ultimately you should take any campground in the area, but this one is both in fine condition and in a fine location. This campsite also puts you just off of Generals Highway, which connects General Sherman to General Grant, the #1 and #2 most notorious trees in the park, let alone in the 48 contiguous states.

I don't recommend this campground, for a couple reasons. First, the campground is not run by the National Park Service, it's run by a concessionaire which has stripped every last shred of "service" out of the facility. We didn't see anyone who worked there until the middle of the 3rd day. The restrooms had toilet paper, and that's about as much service as you should expect. We got extremely lucky that we were able to (barely) fit our not particularly large trailer into the campsite. I tried to call in advance to find out about issues like that, but someone would actually have to work there for anyone to be able to answer questions. Some people in a neighboring campsite had to abandon their reservation because they couldn't fit their trailer in the site. And the sites are generally not close to level, so it takes work to level an RV or trailer. You could say that this campground is set up for tent camping, but there's not convenient access to water in the campground, so that's a problem even in a tent. In general, this isn't a great campground. The only thing it really has going for it is the location, which is why the concessionaire doesn't care about providing service. They're going to book out anyway.

We LOVE this campground! Feels wild but walkable to camp store and Gen. Grant. Mule deer!
