Kite Lake Campground Introduce
Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Kite Lake Campground in Alma, Colorado, offers a unique and serene camping experience. Situated at the base of several 14,000-foot peaks, this campground is a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat in the great outdoors.
The campground features a limited number of campsites, making it an ideal spot for those who prefer a more secluded and intimate camping experience. However, visitors should be prepared for high wind speeds and minimal signage, which adds to the rugged charm of this remote location. The area is known for its stunning views, especially during sunrise and sunset, providing a picturesque backdrop for your outdoor adventures.
Kite Lake Campground is not recommended for standard vehicles due to the rough and challenging terrain. A heavy-duty truck or 4x4 is strongly advised for those planning to drive up to the lake. The lack of cell phone service in the area ensures a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but visitors should plan accordingly and be self-sufficient.
Surrounding the campground are numerous hiking trails, including routes to the nearby 14,000-foot peaks. Even if you don’t reach the summit, the journey itself offers breathtaking views and a rewarding experience. The natural beauty of the area, combined with the opportunity for outdoor activities, makes Kite Lake Campground a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Visitors have praised the campground for its amazing views and peaceful atmosphere. One reviewer mentioned, "This is an amazing place to camp and hike. If you can’t go to the top of the 14k, then go as far as you can and enjoy the beautiful views. The sunset was amazing." Another highlighted the importance of being prepared, stating, "Be respectful of the water and natural environment. Few campsites, high wind speeds, hardly any signage. Beautiful setting and hikes surrounding the area."
Whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply looking to enjoy the natural beauty of Colorado, Kite Lake Campground offers an unforgettable experience. Pack your gear, bring your sense of adventure, and prepare to be amazed by the stunning landscapes and tranquil environment.

No service so beware if you’re at Hoosier pass/fairplay it’s your last cell phone point. The Way finding can be confusing for most, especially if you arrive at night and not during the day. Amazing views. Definitely should have heavy duty truck/4x4. I would strongly discourage a car drive up to kite lake! Be respectful of water and natural environment. Few campsite, high wind speeds, hardly any signage. Beautiful setting and hikes surrounding the area. Fee and parking area are confusing as well
This is an amazing place to camp and hike. If you cant go to the top of the 14k then go as far as you can and enjoy the beautiful views. The sunset was amazing.
Park early. Climb hard. A great place to start a great hike. Lot is full but about 06:30. So get there soon.
The campground itself has a pretty limited number of spots. They have a fee area at the bottom and appears as if you need to pay there (unfair given you can't tell what's available) but there is another fee area at the top. While the space is limited there are a few spots along the road you are able to car camp which work out well. The whole place turns into Disney World by 5am. Recommend camping the night before if you plan to do the hikes. Overall it is a very cool area and a great way to knock of 4 fourteeners before noon!
Nice campground, well taken care of! $20 per night to camp. Vault potty.
