🌲 **Introduction / Overview**
Nestled in the heart of the **Chippewa National Forest**, **Knutson Dam Campground** (officially part of the Bimijiwan Recreation Area) offers a unique and highly desirable camping location in Northern Minnesota. This small, well-maintained campground is perfectly situated on the northeast shore of massive Cass Lake, right where the legendary Mississippi River begins its journey eastward out of the lake.
Knutson Dam is a favorite among local anglers, paddlers, and families seeking a quiet, clean, and accessible retreat. The Ojibwe name for this area, Bimijiwan, translates to "Flowing Water," a nod to the historical presence of the dam and the natural flow of the Mississippi River from Cass Lake. While the dam structure itself has been thoughtfully removed and replaced with an innovative rock arch rapids to enhance fish habitat, the site remains an essential recreational hub.
With only a small number of camping units—typically around 14 sites—the campground provides a more intimate and less crowded experience than larger regional facilities. It is known for its beautiful, slightly primitive setting with stunning views of the surrounding waters and pine-oak-spruce forest. Customers consistently report a family-friendly atmosphere, clear lake water perfect for swimming, and excellent access to world-class fishing and tranquil paddling routes.

🎯 **What is Worth Choosing**
Knutson Dam Campground is the top choice for Minnesotans who value **water-based recreation and family-friendliness** above all else. This campground offers a rare convergence of three major natural assets: a large, beautiful lake (Cass Lake), a historic river (the Mississippi River), and a deep-woods environment (Chippewa National Forest).
It is worth choosing because it simplifies the multi-sport adventure. You can launch your fishing boat onto Cass Lake's trophy waters in the morning and easily launch a kayak onto the calm Mississippi River for a serene day trip in the afternoon. Children friendly campground, well maintained. Swimming was great with the clear water. Didn't find any ticks on kids or dog. Smaller fish around the dock, but that was fine for the kids. Overall we had a great time.
Two boat landings, one lakeside, the other downstream from the dam. The river is a nice, slow place to kayak, canoe, paddleboard, etc. I'm planning on possibly doing a day trip down the river from here. There is also a T dock that seems to be quite popular for fishing; while kayak angling near it, I caught a ton of rock bass and several smaller northern.
Very nice campground. We had site 3 and it had access to the river. Campground is well kept, big field in the middle, pier, and beach on the lake. Water is very clean and clear, great for swimming. Cell service was also very good here. Vault toilets, no showers. Overall would come back.
Gorgeous campground! Peaceful forest, beautiful lake and colorful sunset on it, spacious campsites, clean vault toilet, small sand area which is great for kids to play and swim. Great for launching boats, kayaking, fishing. Right near the bridge, there’s a very good Mississippi River Water trail which is going to Winnie Campground, about 4hr paddling, ~12 miles. Hosts Susan and Richard are very nice, helpful and caring people. It was a great pleasure to talk with them! Big thank you to Richard who fogged the grass on our camp site to keep away vicious mosquitos and shared some tips with us - spoiled Californians who do not know how to deal with such an abundance of annoying insects😂
Nice small and friendly park. Campground host is a perfect fit for this position.
