La Clocha Introduce
La Clocha, located within Big Bend National Park, TX 79834, offers a unique and remote camping experience for those seeking adventure. As part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, La Clocha provides access to two distinct campsites, each with its own characteristics.
Access to La Clocha requires a vehicle capable of handling rugged terrain. The road leading to the campsites is described as "sketchy," necessitating a pickup truck with 4-wheel drive and good all-terrain tires. High clearance vehicles are recommended, especially for La Clocha 2, due to potential washout issues.
Here's a breakdown of the two campsites:
- La Clocha 1 (LC1): Situated on a bluff, LC1 offers a scenic view of the Rio Grande River and surrounding mountains. The ground is primarily rocky, requiring a free-standing tent as driving stakes is difficult.
- La Clocha 2 (LC2): Located at the end of La Clocha Road, past the turn for LC1, LC2 is next to an arroyo or gulch. The campsite features fine dirt and sand, potentially dusty. A hill on the north side provides wind protection. LC2 is about 100 yards from the Rio Grande River, with easy river access, though vegetation obstructs river views from the campsite. It is important to note that LC2 can become muddy and prone to flash floods after rain.
Key considerations for camping at La Clocha:
- Remote Location: Experience true backcountry camping away from developed areas.
- Rugged Access: Requires a 4x4 vehicle with good tires and high clearance.
- Terrain Variation: LC1 is rocky, while LC2 is dirt and sand.
- Environmental Awareness: Be aware of local fauna and potential weather hazards, including flash floods.
La Clocha offers an adventurous camping experience within the stunning landscape of Big Bend National Park. Be prepared for a remote and rugged environment.

This is the end of the road, On this side of the park you cannot be more remote for a pull in site to camp. The road down is sketchy you'll need at minimum a Pickup truck with 4 good AT tires and a good amount rubber on them. I was at site 2 which runs down to the river, you enter a gully that has a washout issue you do need a good clearance on your vehicle to navigate the road. I do not recommend walking towards the river at night as the Fauna bites. The site is all dirt and hard packed. Was here 11/29/19
There are two La Clocha campsites. La Clocha 1 is on a bluff with a good view of the Rio Grande River and the mountains. The area is primarily rock so if you are using a tent you will need a free-standing tent as driving stakes in the ground will be very difficult. If you go to the end of the La Clocha Road past the turn for La Clocha 1 (LC1) campsite you will come to La Clocha 2 (LC2) campsite. It is located next to an arroyo or gulch. The north side of the campsite has a hill that offers good wind protection from north winds if camping in the winter. The ground is a fine dirt and sand and can be dusty to camp in. It has vegetation and some trees for shade. It is about 100 yards from the Rio Grande River. The river is easily accessible but there is no view of river from La Clocha 2 due to vegetation and river cane. If there has been rain recently or if rain is in the forecast LC2 would be muddy and if there was a flash flood you might have to abandon the site. The pictures in my review are LC2 campsite.
Great desert camp site. The road is rough to get here, it's good to have 4wd. There's bear boxes. You can walk around and see the Rio grande. Pretty sunset too. Clean and peaceful site.
Such a great view. Was windy that night but that campsite is gorgeous. I HIGHLY recommend it.
Amazing spot with amazing views! Highly suggest if you have the ability to do backcountry off road camping!
