Lac qui Parle Upper Campground Introduce
🌲 Introduction / Overview: Experience the “Lake that Talks”
Welcome to Lac qui Parle Upper Campground, a premier destination for Minnesota campers looking for an authentic prairie experience paired with modern State Park amenities. Located on a spacious, open bluff overlooking the beautiful Lac qui Parle Lake, the campground provides a unique and tranquil escape in the western part of our state. The name "Lac qui Parle," a French translation of a Dakota phrase, means "the lake that talks," a fitting description for a location renowned for the chorus of thousands of migratory waterfowl that pass through the area in spring and fall.
The Upper Campground is the most developed section of Lac qui Parle State Park’s camping facilities, designed to accommodate both large RVs and tent campers with comfort and convenience. While it sits on an open prairie landscape with fewer mature trees—a feature that provides spectacular, unobstructed sky views—the sites are generously spaced, offering a welcome sense of freedom and openness. This campground is a beloved local spot for anglers, birdwatchers, history buffs, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat far from the city lights.
The state park and its campgrounds are famous for offering some of the best fishing for walleye, northern pike, and panfish in Western Minnesota. Furthermore, the wide-open views make it a fantastic location for catching the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) when conditions are right—a truly spectacular Minnesota highlight!
📍 Location and Accessibility: A Western Minnesota Gem
Lac qui Parle Upper Campground is situated within Lac qui Parle State Park, a beautiful convergence point of the Minnesota River and Lac qui Parle Lake. Its location in the Minnesota River Valley makes it easily accessible for residents across the state while feeling perfectly secluded.
Address: 1075 140th Ave NW, Watson, MN 56295, USA
Key highlights regarding location and access for your trip:
Driving Convenience: The park is conveniently located just a few miles from the small town of Watson, and the larger town of Montevideo is a short drive away, offering restaurants and more substantial grocery and supply options. It’s a great stop along the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway.
Lake View Sites: Many sites in the Upper Campground’s loops boast enviable views of the lake, making the lack of heavy tree cover a worthwhile trade-off.
Two Park Sections: The Upper Campground is distinct from the Lower Campground (which is smaller, more shaded, and sometimes prone to flooding). The Upper area sits higher on the bluff, providing better views, modern facilities, and accommodating larger vehicles.
Required Permits: Remember that a Minnesota State Park vehicle permit (either a daily or annual pass) is required for entry, in addition to any camping fees.
🛠️ Services Offered: Full Comfort on the Prairie
The Upper Campground is characterized by its semi-modern facilities, offering several amenities that cater to a comfortable camping experience, especially for RV and trailer users.
Campsite Reservations: Reservations are highly recommended, especially for weekend and summer stays, and can be made in advance through the Minnesota DNR's reservation system. Day-of reservations are also sometimes available, as noted by local visitors.
Campsite Types: The campground offers a variety of site configurations, including standard drive-in sites, electric hookup sites (30-amp and 50-amp available), and a selection of full hookup sites (water, electric, and sewer) that can accommodate large RVs up to 60 feet.
Modern Bathhouse: A centrally located bathhouse provides hot showers and flush toilets (available seasonally), which is a significant convenience.
Water & Waste: Potable water spigots are available, and a sanitary dump station is located near the campground entrance for easy use upon arrival or departure.
Campsite Amenities: Each site comes standard with a gravel pad, a picnic table, and a fire ring with a grill for cooking over an open fire.
Alternative Lodging: The park also features heated Camper Cabins that can be rented year-round for those seeking a cozier, more comfortable camping option.
🌟 Features / Highlights: Stargazing, History, and Wildlife
The reasons Minnesota locals return to Lac qui Parle are numerous, combining natural splendor with historical and recreational opportunities.
Stellar Stargazing and Northern Lights: Due to its remote location and open prairie setting, the Upper Campground is miles away from light pollution, making it an exceptional spot for watching the stars and often providing opportunities to view the captivating Northern Lights during periods of high solar activity.
Birdwatching Mecca: Lac qui Parle is a critical stopover point on the Mississippi Flyway. The park, adjacent to the massive Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area, hosts spectacular concentrations of migratory birds, including thousands of Canada Geese, Pelicans, and Whistling Swans, particularly in the spring and fall.
Historic Cottonwood Tree: A short but worthwhile hike from the Upper Campground leads directly to Minnesota’s oldest recorded Cottonwood tree, a massive natural landmark that is a must-see for all visitors (be aware the path is noted as being somewhat steep).
On-Site Recreation: Visitors have access to a swimming beach (seasonal), a boat launch into Lac qui Parle Lake for fishing and boating, and an extensive network of trails for hiking and snowshoeing/cross-country skiing in the winter.
Interpretive Center: The Park Office houses an interpretive center with engaging wildlife displays and information on the area’s rich history, including the Waḣpetuŋwaŋ Dakota village and the historic Fort Renville site.

Customer Reviews
Lake view sites, great hiking g right out of the campground. We visited during the week in October and has no problem picking the perfect site with a "day of" reservation.
The Upper Campground is spacious, on open prairie with few trees. Unfortunately there were too many clouds for much stargazing, but we did catch the Northern Lights! After quiet hours some of the other campers were quite loud and their kids were armed with military grade flashlights, but I understand that's beyond the park staff's control. We heard and saw quite a bit of water fowl on the state hike. Lots of places for fishing, and there's a bait shop nearby. The office staff were very friendly and helpful, and the kiddos loved exploring the interpretive center. The showers were very busy, but still took several cycles to heat up and the water pressure wasn't enough to wash sand from my littles' hair. We picked up quite a bit of trash along the park near the swimming beach, but otherwise the beach was very clean, but we were informed the lake was starting to turn. It's a short hike to Minnesota's oldest Cottonwood tree, but be forewarned that the path is a bit steep. The park also has several scenic lookouts.
Nice campground (someday) right now it is mostly an open field. The upper campground is relatively new and it looks like they are setting it up to have nice privacy in the sites. The shower room is a bit small for the number of sites. There is only 2 toilets for the guys, but those 2 rooms are also unisex and have showers in them - so if you're a guy, be prepared to use the vault toilets on busy weekends. The sunset sky is amazing here overlooking the waterway. The hiking trails are more walking than hiking right now, but the old lower campground (that is permanently closed for camping) is still open for day use and has some nice trails - if you don't mind a short drive to get there. If you go to the lower camp you have to visit the map room - you truly get the scale of how huge the waterway is when you see it laid out like that.
This is a great wide open clean campground with alot of space between site. Very big rig friendly. Awsome bathrooms/shower and dump station. Some full hookup sites, some electric only site and some no hookup sites. Great sunset views. We will be back.
Nice State Park. A little open for my tastes, but it is an R.V Park for sure. We stayed in one of their cabins over Halloween weekend. Thankfully it had great heat! I wish my camera could have done the night sky justice. It was so dark and you could see every star. Absolutely stunning!
