Lake Shawnee Campground Introduce
For generations of Kansans, the name Lake Shawnee Campground in Topeka evokes fond memories of family vacations, first fish catches, and peaceful lakeside moments. This jewel, maintained by Shawnee County Parks + Recreation, is far more than just a place to park an RV or pitch a tent; it’s a dedicated recreational hub that blends the simplicity of camping with the immense range of activities offered by the surrounding 1,100-acre Lake Shawnee County Park.
The campground's enduring popularity is confirmed by the deep loyalty of its patrons. As one customer noted, it has been a "childhood favorite" for fifty years, highlighting a legacy of continued improvement and cherished memories—from learning to water ski on the lake to enjoying winter camping even in the snow. This long-standing connection to the community gives the park an authenticity and welcoming atmosphere that is hard to replicate.
Positioned right on a peninsula jutting into the lake, the campground offers many sites with stunning water views, providing an immediate sense of escape and natural beauty despite its close proximity to the city of Topeka. Whether you are an RVer seeking newly renovated full hookups with concrete pads or a traditional camper looking for a simple tent spot with an electric hookup, Lake Shawnee Campground caters to a variety of outdoor preferences.
The staff’s reputation for genuine, friendly service is another major draw. One reviewer recounted how the staff was so helpful they even brought passes directly to their site, while another expressed deep gratitude when the campground accommodated their broken-down RV after an emergency stop off I-70. This commitment to going the extra mile provides significant peace of mind for travelers and locals alike.
Lake Shawnee Campground stands as a shining example of public recreation done right, offering accessible, affordable, and amenity-rich outdoor experiences that contribute meaningfully to the quality of life in the Topeka region.

The sheer volume and variety of recreational opportunities available within the Lake Shawnee Park complex elevates the camping experience here far beyond the ordinary. Campers don't just get a site; they get a temporary membership to a massive playground of outdoor fun. The centerpiece is, of course, the lake itself, a 410-acre body of water perfect for fishing, boating, and sailing.
Beyond the water, the park features a renowned 7-mile paved trail that encircles the lake, ideal for walking, jogging, or biking—a true asset for fitness enthusiasts and casual strollers alike. The presence of a golf course, the Ted Ensley Gardens, tennis courts, and sports complexes means there is literally an activity for every member of the family, regardless of age or interest.
The investment in infrastructure, including the newly renovated north side with concrete pads and full hookups, demonstrates a commitment to meeting the demands of modern RV travelers. While some older areas maintain a more classic feel, the ongoing upgrades ensure that the campground remains competitive and comfortable, a key factor for long-term stays (up to 30 nights for RVs, 5 nights for tents).
The campground's dual-purpose appeal—acting as a convenient, safe stop for road-weary travelers (as noted in the I-70 breakdown scenario) and a primary destination for local family fun—secures its role as an essential part of the Kansas outdoor scene. It perfectly encapsulates the welcoming and nature-loving spirit of the Sunflower State.

Customer Reviews
This campground is a childhood favorite and has continued improving over many years. I do wish they had more site sewage but not a big deal. The staff is great and even brought our passes to us at our site…caught a Blue Gill off the dock with a nice fat worm! Since then another Blue Gill and a Small Mouth Bass have been shared with me by the Lake. I returned all of them to the Lake. Fifty years of memories at this jewel of Topeka, Kansas. Learned to water ski here, did Winter camping even in a foot of snow, and many other great times!
We broke down on the side of I-70 and were very thankful that Lake Shawnee Campground had an opening for our RV to be towed to while our truck was repaired. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Nice park, nice campground.
We stayed at Lake Shawnee while we travelled home from Utah so we only stayed one night. The campground is spotless and the views are amazing! Almost all sites have a water view of some kind. The price was very reasonable! The staff were wonderful. They greet you at the entrance so you dont even have to get out of your truck! If we lived closer to Topeka we would definitely go back again and again.
Beautiful campground with tons of amenities. We had a spot just up from the lake area. It was quiet, and the sites were spacious. The showers and toilets are clean and well maintained. We had a fire pit and a picnic table. The location is close to the highway, but you wouldn't know it. Excellent place!
Beautiful park. Swimming beach, fishing dock and playground for everyone to enjoy. Lots of nice grassy areas. Sites were nice and well spaced out. Bathrooms/showers were nice. We really enjoyed our stop over here. Would be nice for longer stays too.
