Lake Sherwood Recreation Area Introduce

Lake Sherwood Recreation Area, nestled within the vast expanse of the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, is a premier destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a comprehensive camping and recreational experience. This area is distinguished by Lake Sherwood itself, a 165-acre (or 156-acre depending on source) mountain oasis, which is the largest lake within the Monongahela National Forest. Operating under the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, Lake Sherwood Recreation Area offers a wide array of facilities and activities designed to immerse visitors in the natural beauty of the Allegheny Mountains.

The environment of Lake Sherwood Recreation Area is truly a highlight. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,600 feet, the area is surrounded by isolated high ridges and dense forests, creating a tranquil and picturesque setting. The lake itself is man-made but blends seamlessly with the natural landscape, featuring two sand beaches – one on the "mainland" and another on a charming island accessible by a scenic footbridge – which are among the most beautiful swimming areas in West Virginia. The forest environment is home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, coyotes, wild turkeys, and white-tailed deer, offering ample opportunities for wildlife viewing. The quiet nature of the lake, where only electric boat motors are permitted due to its size, ensures a peaceful experience for all water activities. Cell service is generally not available in the area, which further enhances the opportunity for visitors to disconnect and enjoy the serenity of nature.

As a comprehensive facility within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, Lake Sherwood Recreation Area provides extensive services and features. The campground offers a total of 104 individual campsites and 10 group campsites, distributed across four camping areas: West Shore, Pine Run, Meadow Creek Loop, and Cales Knoll Loop. Each individual campsite is equipped with a parking spur, tent pad, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. While the campground does not offer electrical, sewage, or water hook-ups at individual sites, a convenient dump station is available on-site for RV and trailer campers. This is an important distinction for RV users who rely on full hookups elsewhere. All camping areas are served by restrooms with running water, flush toilets, and hot showers, which are available during the summer season. In the spring and fall, vault toilets and a hand pump well are provided. The gravel parking aprons at sites can be up to 20 feet wide, accommodating various RV and trailer sizes.

Beyond the core camping facilities, Lake Sherwood Recreation Area boasts a rich selection of recreational features that cater to all ages. Water activities are central to the experience, with swimming beaches, three boat launches, and a dock available for public use. Boats and canoes are available for rent at the lake's boathouse from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The lake is well-stocked for fishing, with species such as tiger muskie, channel catfish, bullhead, bluegill, and largemouth bass. For land-based recreation, there is a large picnic area with individual sites and a picnic shelter, complete with grills, picnic tables, and waste receptacles. Other amenities include a playground, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits. The area is also a hiker's paradise, offering numerous loop trail opportunities for all skill levels, including the popular 3.5-mile scenic loop around Lake Sherwood, as well as the Upper Meadow Trail, Meadow Mountain Trail, and Meadow Creek Trail. These diverse offerings ensure that visitors have plenty of options for an active and engaging outdoor stay.

Promotional information for Lake Sherwood Recreation Area often highlights its status as a "complete family destination." Key selling points include the extensive recreational opportunities, particularly the swimming beaches and diverse water activities, making it ideal for summer vacations. The natural beauty of being located within the Monongahela National Forest, surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains, is a significant draw for nature lovers and those seeking a scenic escape. The presence of well-maintained facilities, including hot showers and flush toilets (during peak season), along with picnic areas and a playground, emphasizes its family-friendly appeal. While it lacks individual site hookups for RVs, the availability of a dump station and the overall emphasis on a more traditional, nature-immersed camping experience differentiates it from more amenity-heavy RV parks. The ease of making reservations up to 6 months in advance for standard sites and 12 months for group sites via recreation.gov also promotes ease of planning for visitors. The affordable day-use fees ($5/vehicle) and campground fees ($16-$20/night for single sites, $40 for double, $100 for group sites) make it an accessible option for many. The campground is open year-round, though full services are seasonal, offering flexibility for different travel preferences. Reviews often praise the "beautiful views," "large private campsites," "clean facilities," and the "peaceful atmosphere," reinforcing the promotional claims of a serene and enjoyable outdoor experience. The location's seclusion contributes to its charm, with visitors appreciating the opportunity to truly disconnect.

In summary, Lake Sherwood Recreation Area is a standout offering within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, particularly for those prioritizing natural beauty, diverse recreational activities, and a peaceful, family-oriented environment. Its setting on the largest lake in Monongahela National Forest provides unparalleled access to water sports and fishing, complemented by extensive hiking trails. While it operates without individual site electrical or water hookups, the presence of a dump station, clean bathhouses with hot showers (seasonal), and a wide array of on-site amenities like playgrounds and picnic areas ensures a comfortable and engaging camping experience. Its appeal lies in offering a quintessential outdoor adventure, encouraging visitors to embrace the wilderness and create lasting family memories.

Absolutely amazing experience! We stayed two nights and had a great time. We did not have a reservation but we're lucky to get a couple fcfs sites right on the lake. The lake was beautiful to kayak in and fish. They have kayak rentals, and a little shop with ice and some basic grocery needs. They also have a great beach area for the kids to play with bathrooms and rinse shower stations. Campground was very clean and quiet, bath house was very clean and water stations were spaced closest between every couple sites. We saw deer and wild rabbits during our stay. There are a few hiking trails that circle the lake also. Much to do here! We will definitely be back to enjoy this park again.

My parents started taking me here as far back as I can remember. Over the years it has been our go to place for a fun family camping experience. Now I have a child of my own and am continuing a tradition. I love Lake Sherwood! Perfect for that must have family time.

We were very lucky to get to camp here on Saturday of labor day weekend. It was one of the best weekends we've had in a long time. Getting out on the water is a must. Anna May that works at the Kayak rental shop is very kinda and helpful. We hope to see her again next year. The pictures will explain the rest.

Hidden gem of a state park with easy mountain biking trails, kayak rentals, camping, day use area, and a beach. Small fee to enter. Totally worth it.

I grew up camping here. This place holds my fondest memories with my grandparents and my family. We have met some of the best people here. It is beautiful with plenty to do. The campsites are clean and large and private enough. The bathhouses are really well maintained. The camp hosts are the nicest people. You can swim, hike, ride bikes, go fishing. I brought my children here to keep the tradition going! My youngest son and I got the paddle boat out and went all over the lake. My oldest is really into fishing, and he was able to catch a few nice sized bass from the boat. However, as a kid, my favorite part of Lake Sherwood was the fishing access from the campsites. I'd wake up in the mornings and fish the banks from sun up to sun down. The lake seems to have been taken over by some sort of slimy lilly pad... there's absolutely no bank access for fishing anymore. Speaking with one of the camp hosts, they mentioned they've unsuccessfully tried getting the problem fixed. It was pretty disappointing not being able to fish with the smaller kiddos from the bank, but still, it's a place you want to visit!!
