Lake Snowden Campground Introduce
Lake Snowden Campground, an integral part of the larger Lake Snowden Education & Recreation Park, stands as a prominent destination within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category in Southeastern Ohio. Operated by Hocking College, this 675-acre park offers a unique blend of natural beauty, educational opportunities, and extensive recreational facilities. It's renowned for providing a comprehensive outdoor experience, catering to various camping styles and interests, from serene lakeside relaxation to active outdoor pursuits.
The environment at Lake Snowden Campground is primarily defined by the picturesque 136-acre Lake Snowden itself, which is the largest of four lakes within the Margaret Creek Conservancy District. The park's landscape features rolling hills, dense woodlands, and open fields, creating a diverse and visually appealing setting. Many campsites offer direct lake views or convenient access to the water, providing a tranquil backdrop for campers. The presence of a fish hatchery on-site further enhances the aquatic environment, supporting healthy fish populations for angling enthusiasts. Large, often mature, trees provide ample shade across many areas of the campground, contributing to a comfortable and natural ambiance. The well-maintained grounds and facilities are frequently highlighted by visitors, ensuring a clean and pleasant stay.
The layout of the campground is designed to accommodate different types of camping. There are designated areas such as Locust Grove, ideal for those utilizing horse trails, and Big Oak camp, which features some lakefront sites and proximity to play areas. Hickory Camp offers a more secluded feel, closer to a camp shelter house and off the beaten path. This thoughtful zoning helps to cater to diverse camper preferences, creating a sense of community while also allowing for individual privacy. The natural environment is leveraged to its full potential, offering both open spaces for activities and wooded areas for a more secluded feel, embodying the essence of a varied "Campgrounds & RV Parks" experience.
The services offered at Lake Snowden Campground are comprehensive, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay for all visitors. For RV campers, the campground provides a significant number of sites with electrical hookups, including both 30-amp and 50-amp options, and many sites also offer full hookups with water and sewer connections. Primitive, non-electric campsites are also available for those who prefer a more rustic experience. The convenience of a camper dumping station is provided on-site, a crucial service for RVers. Essential comfort services include clean and well-maintained restroom facilities with hot showers, and laundry facilities, which are particularly appreciated by those on extended stays. A concession stand or general store is typically available, offering essential supplies, snacks, beverages, firewood, and ice, minimizing the need for campers to leave the park for necessities.
Beyond the fundamental camping amenities, Lake Snowden offers services that enhance the recreational aspects of the park. Boat launch facilities and boat docks are available for easy access to the lake. While horsepower limits for boats might exist, the lake generally welcomes various types of watercraft. The campground often provides daily, weekly, monthly, and even seasonal site rentals, catering to both short-term visitors and those seeking extended stays. The association with Hocking College also means that the park serves as a live learning lab for students in natural resources programs, potentially contributing to the high standards of maintenance and resource management within the park. The staff, often comprising college students and dedicated personnel, are typically knowledgeable and helpful, contributing to a positive guest experience within this "Campgrounds & RV Parks" setting.
The features of Lake Snowden Campground are diverse and cater to a wide array of outdoor activities and interests. A primary feature is the vast 136-acre lake itself, which is central to many recreational opportunities. Fishing is extremely popular, with the lake stocked with various species. Boating is a major draw, with no horsepower restrictions, allowing for powerboating, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. A designated sandy swimming beach and bathhouse provide a safe and enjoyable area for cooling off during warmer months. For land-based activities, Lake Snowden boasts an extensive network of trails. There are miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking and horseback riding, including the prominent 7.1-mile Lakeside Horse Trail (orange trail) that circles the lake, and additional blue and green blazed trails. An archery range is also available, providing a unique recreational option.
Other notable features include multiple well-maintained shelter houses and numerous picnic areas with tables and grills, ideal for day-use visitors or group gatherings. Horseshoe courts are also typically available. A distinctive feature of Lake Snowden is its role as the annual host of the Ohio Pawpaw Festival, a popular event held every September. This festival draws large crowds and features bands, kids' activities, and unique local offerings, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the campground's calendar. The availability of various site types, including Class A and Class B sites, and one-room cabins, further broadens the appeal of the campground, making it suitable for different comfort levels and group sizes.
Promotional information for Lake Snowden Campground often highlights its picturesque setting, abundant recreational opportunities, and family-friendly atmosphere. Marketing materials showcase the scenic lake views, the diverse range of activities (fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, horse riding), and the overall value of an outdoor escape. Information about daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal rates is typically provided to encourage extended stays. The campground also promotes its affiliation with Hocking College, emphasizing its educational and conservation aspects. Special events, particularly the Ohio Pawpaw Festival, are heavily promoted to attract visitors. Customer Reviews
Gone to every pawpaw fest for the last 5 years or so, we have the best time. Beautiful setting, great campsites. The shower house could be better, often full of spiders and such, but not terrible for a campground, tho I've seen better. The lake is great, with a small beach and plenty of room to paddle around
Nice, well maintained lake, waterpark, and campground. This isn't a state park. It is open to the public but the waterpark has an admission fee.Check the website for hours and prices. It also has playground equipment, basketball court, shelter houses, restrooms and trails.I'm not sure if these amenities are for those staying at the campground only or not. Again call ahead or check out the website.
Reserved campsite for 4 nights. Arrived to check in and office was closed. No staff available except 2 persons at the lake pay swimming area. Went there to ask how we could contact someone about our camp area. We had no table, no fire ring and no camper pad area. Water was across the street and we were advised we could not run water hose across the road to fill up tank. Someone was supposed to meet us at our site at 3pm, no one showed up. We had to find our own table and fire ring. Also the shower house is unsanitary, reeking of mold, no toilet paper. All bathrooms throughout the entire park has been shut down and ports jons set in front of or beside. Those have not been cleaned for some time and are in need of servicing. This campground could be an absolute wonderful place if it had the proper staff and updated facilities. There needs to be staff that knows what is going on. Office needs to be staffed and messages need to be returned if there isn’t anyone in office during office hours. Very disappointed in what has changed since our first stay just 3 short years ago! We will not be back!
We stayed 2 weeks, and for us, the campground is very quiet, not very crowded, but terribly mismanaged and way understaffed. The bathhouse (women's side) sometimes has toilet paper, never any hand soap and occasionally paper towels. The showers are disgusting! I'm not sure when the last time they were cleaned. The RV spots were large enough, but far from level.
Military discount. No restraunt on property but small patry. Water equipment needs to be upgraded to include handle bars and pullies to alloe children better gripping. Young man working in office needs more training in customers interaction.
