Lake Vesuvius Picnic Areas - Furnace Shelter Introduce

The Lake Vesuvius Picnic Areas - Furnace Shelter is a prominent feature within the broader Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area of the Wayne National Forest in Ohio. While categorized under "Campgrounds & RV Parks," it primarily functions as a large day-use group picnic shelter, offering extensive amenities for gatherings, events, and outdoor enjoyment. This unique facility combines historical significance with modern recreational opportunities, making it a popular choice for local users seeking a picturesque and functional outdoor venue.

Environment: A Scenic Blend of History and Nature

The Furnace Shelter is strategically positioned within a captivating natural environment that boasts both historical charm and serene beauty. It is located just above the historic Vesuvius iron furnace ruins, from which the entire recreation area derives its name. This proximity to the furnace provides a unique historical backdrop, allowing visitors to connect with the region's industrial past while enjoying the outdoors. The shelter also sits south of and offers views of the tranquil Lake Vesuvius, a 143-acre lake formed by the damming of Storms Creek by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939. The rugged hills and rock outcroppings of the Wayne National Forest provide a scenic and natural backdrop to the area.

The immediate surroundings of the Furnace Shelter include grassy areas suitable for activities and are generally well-maintained. The natural setting offers a peaceful atmosphere for picnicking and gatherings, with mature trees providing shade. The overall Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area encompasses a 1,200-acre complex, featuring diverse topography that includes wooded areas, open spaces, and the picturesque lake. Visitors can expect to be immersed in a natural environment, often encountering local flora and fauna. While it’s a developed area, the sense of being within a national forest is strong, promoting a relaxed and engaging outdoor experience.

Services: Comprehensive Amenities for Group Gatherings

As a designated picnic shelter within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" platform category, the Furnace Shelter is equipped with a range of services designed to accommodate large groups and facilitate comfortable day-use activities. The shelter boasts a substantial capacity of 125 people, making it ideal for family reunions, company picnics, community events, and other large gatherings. Key amenities available at the shelter include:

  • Electricity: A significant advantage for events requiring power for catering, sound systems, or other equipment.
  • Drinking Water: Potable water is available at the shelter, typically from April 1st through October 31st. During winter months, water is turned off, and the closest available toilet is at the boat ramp.
  • Cooking Grills: Multiple grills are provided, allowing for easy preparation of meals for large groups.
  • Picnic Tables: Ample picnic tables are available within the shelter, offering comfortable seating for dining and socializing.
  • Restrooms: Flush toilets are available, though restroom information can vary seasonally, and they are typically closed during winter.

It's important to note that while the Furnace Shelter offers these conveniences, vehicles must stay in designated parking areas, and driving up to the shelter house is not permitted to preserve the surrounding environment. Trash disposal is typically handled through designated bins, and visitors are expected to help maintain the cleanliness of the area. Reservations for the Furnace Shelter are highly recommended, as it is a popular venue. These can be made online through Recreation.gov or by calling the National Recreation Reservation Service. If not reserved, the shelter may be used on a first-come, first-served basis for a daily fee, payable at the Iron Ridge Campground fee tube. A reservation cut-off window requires reservations to be made at least 4 days prior to arrival.

Features: Recreation and Event-Ready Facilities

The Furnace Shelter distinguishes itself with features that extend beyond basic picnicking, enhancing its utility as a recreational and event space within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" framework. A standout feature is the inclusion of a ballfield, providing ample space for sports and games, making it particularly appealing for family events or youth groups. Adjacent to the shelter, an amphitheater offers a dedicated space for presentations, performances, or educational programs, further adding to the versatility of the venue.

The shelter's location within the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area grants users access to a wealth of other recreational opportunities. The 143-acre Lake Vesuvius itself is a popular spot for fishing, with species like bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. Boating is permitted (electric motors only), with a boat ramp available for easy access. A swimming beach at Big Bend provides a place for cooling off during warmer months. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the area boasts more than 25 miles of hiking trails, including an accessible 1/3-mile boardwalk along the southwest edge of the lake and a 1/2-mile Longbow Archery Trail with field targets. Additionally, a comprehensive 46-mile Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail System is available for equestrian enthusiasts, typically open from April 15th to December 15th. The combination of its dedicated facilities and access to a wide array of outdoor activities makes the Furnace Shelter an excellent choice for a diverse range of gatherings.
