Ledge Camp Introduce
🌲 Introduction / Overview: The Spacious Backcountry of Ledge Camp
For Minnesota's dedicated backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts, Ledge Camp represents a highly-regarded stop along the world-class Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). Situated deep within the rugged terrain near Schroeder, this designated backcountry campsite offers a welcoming and relatively spacious resting point on your North Shore adventure. Unlike smaller, more secluded SHT sites, Ledge Camp is known for having a larger footprint, providing multiple spots for tents and a sense of openness often appreciated by hikers needing to spread out or accommodating a few different groups.
Ledge Camp is a vital piece of the SHT’s infrastructure, which is maintained by the Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA) to encourage responsible, low-impact camping. It is a strictly hike-in, hike-out location, perfectly embodying the spirit of wilderness travel that defines the North Country National Scenic Trail experience. Whether you are tackling a short section hike or completing a multi-week thru-hike of the SHT's approximately 300 miles, Ledge Camp serves as a memorable and functional overnight stop, allowing hikers to recharge before ascending or descending the challenging terrain characteristic of the Superior National Forest area.
🗺️ Location and Accessibility: A Remote Stop Near Schroeder
Ledge Camp is a remote campsite located directly on the Superior Hiking Trail within Schroeder Township, MN 55613, USA. The geographical context places it in the heart of the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior, a region defined by dramatic ridgelines, sweeping lake views, and dense boreal forests.
Accessibility: As with all SHT backcountry sites, Ledge Camp is accessible only by foot. It is positioned between key trailheads in the region, typically requiring a 3- to 8-mile hike from the nearest parking and access points, such as those off Cook County Road 1 (Cramer Road) or areas near Temperance River State Park. Hikers must consult SHTA maps and guidebooks to plan the specific route, distances, and elevation changes to reach the camp. While the exact position is inland from Highway 61, the trail itself is demanding, featuring the SHT's characteristic ascents to rock outcroppings and descents into creek and river valleys. The remoteness ensures a genuine wilderness experience, free from vehicular traffic and immediate road noise. Hikers often rely on local shuttle services or car pooling to manage the logistics of their trailhead drop-offs and pick-ups.
đź’§ Services Offered: Essential Backcountry Amenities
Ledge Camp, like all SHTA-maintained campsites, adheres to a rustic standard, providing basic facilities to support hikers while minimizing environmental impact. No permits or reservations are required, and all sites must be shared.
The core services available at Ledge Camp include:
- Multiple Designated Tent Pads: A notable feature of Ledge Camp is its comparative size, which accommodates a greater number of tent setups than the typical 2-3 tent pad SHT site. Customer reviews confirm "plenty of space for multiple campsites," making it suitable for larger groups (within SHTA guidelines) or high-traffic weekends.
 - Communal Fire Rings: The site features one or more established metal fire rings for safe campfires (subject to current fire restrictions). These areas often include wooden or log seating benches for social use.
 - Open-Air Latrine (Privy): A basic, non-flushing latrine is provided a short walk away from the main camp area for hygienic disposal of human waste. This helps maintain the cleanliness and health of the surrounding forest environment.
 - Natural Water Source: While not explicitly detailed, SHT camps are generally located near a natural water source (creek or pond). ⚠️ Important: All water collected from natural sources must be filtered and purified/boiled before consumption. Hikers should always carry sufficient water or a reliable filtration system.

🌟 Features / Highlights: Spaciousness and Sun-Dappled Woods
Ledge Camp is a favorite among SHT users for several key attributes that enhance the camping experience:
- Abundant Space and Variety: A primary highlight is the sheer space, which offers a mix of tenting areas. The customer review points out the benefit of "plenty of sunny and shady spots to setup camp," allowing hikers to choose the ideal micro-climate for their overnight stay, whether seeking morning sun to dry gear or deep shade for a cooler sleep.
 - Excellent Fall Foliage: Located in the mixed hardwoods and conifers of the North Shore, this area is exceptional during the autumn. The vibrant colors of the maple and birch forests make the hike to and from Ledge Camp a stunning visual experience, although hikers should be prepared for "leaves that fell and can be pretty wet if it has been raining," as noted by a customer.
 - Prominence on the Trail: The camp’s name suggests it may be located near an elevated feature or "ledge," which often means proximity to one of the trail’s famous overlooks. While not guaranteed, SHT sections in this area are known for sudden, rewarding views of Lake Superior or the inland forest ridges.
 - Group-Friendly (Within Limits): Given the ample space, Ledge Camp is well-suited for multiple hikers or small groups (remembering that the SHTA requires groups of 8 or more to follow specific guidelines for non-designated sites). The size reduces the chance of feeling overcrowded, even when sharing with other backpackers.

Great campsite. Plenty of sunny and shady spots to setup camp. There's plenty of space for multiple campsites plus there's fire pits. In the fall time it get really covered in leaves that fell and can be pretty wet if it has been raining.
