Hey there, fellow Montanans! This isn't just a basic parking lot setup; it's a dedicated campground that truly offers a practical and pleasant experience, especially for those traveling with RVs, yet retaining a peaceful atmosphere.
Situated in Montana's capital city, the Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground provides a unique blend of accessibility to urban amenities and stunning natural surroundings. Imagine settling into your spot with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, enjoying the quiet evenings, and even spotting local wildlife like deer right in your camp! It's an ideal base for exploring Helena's rich history, vibrant downtown, and the countless outdoor opportunities that make Montana the "Treasure State." Whether you're passing through, attending an event at the fairgrounds, or simply looking for a convenient home base for your Montana adventures, this campground offers a friendly and welcoming environment for all.
The Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground is conveniently located at 98 W Custer Ave, Helena, MT 59602, USA. Helena, Montana’s capital city, is centrally located within the state, making it an excellent hub for exploring various regions. The fairgrounds themselves are easily accessible from major roadways, including Interstate 15, which runs north-south through Montana. This makes it a highly convenient stop for RVers and campers traveling across the state or just looking for a quick getaway from nearby towns.
Access to the campground within the fairgrounds property is well-defined. While the fairgrounds host various events throughout the year, the campground area is intentionally "set back from the rest of the grounds," providing a sense of separation and quiet. This design ensures that campers can enjoy a peaceful stay even during bustling fair or event times. Maneuvering larger RVs into sites is generally manageable, although some reviews suggest that roads within the campground might be graded higher than the sites themselves, which is something to be mindful of during parking.
The location in Helena means campers have immediate access to gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and other essential services just a short drive away. This proximity to urban conveniences while still offering a distinct camping feel is a significant advantage, especially for those who appreciate the ease of restocking supplies or grabbing a quick meal without having to travel far. For those without a vehicle, the campground's relatively central location within Helena might allow for easier access to public transport or ride-sharing services, connecting them to the city's attractions.
- Electric Hookups: All campsites are equipped with electric hookups, offering 30 or 50 amp service, a significant convenience for RVs.
- Water Availability: While there are no individual water hookups at each site, water spigots are available for campers to fill up their fresh water tanks before parking.
- Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets for restroom facilities, distinguishing it from many fairgrounds that might only offer portable options.
- No Dump Station On-Site: It's important to note that the campground does not have an on-site dump station. However, there are gas stations and other facilities nearby in Helena that offer RV dump stations for a small fee or sometimes for free.
- Pet-Friendly: Based on general fairgrounds policies and common campground practices in Montana, it is generally pet-friendly, provided pets are kept on a leash and waste is properly disposed of. (Always confirm specific pet policies with the fairgrounds directly).
- Quiet Hours: Standard quiet hours are typically enforced to ensure a peaceful environment for all campers. (Common practice in established campgrounds).
- Actual Campground Setup: Unlike many fairgrounds that simply offer a parking lot for camping, Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground is structured like a traditional campground with designated sites and a set-back area for more privacy.
- Great Mountain Views: Campers can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding Montana mountains, offering a picturesque backdrop for their stay.
- Deer in Camp: A delightful highlight for many visitors is the regular appearance of deer wandering through the campground, adding a touch of Montana wildlife to the experience.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite its proximity to the fairgrounds, the campground is noted for being quiet and peaceful, providing a relaxing environment for campers.
- Proximity to Playground: For families traveling with children, a playground is located approximately 1/4 mile from the campground, offering a convenient recreational outlet.
- Spacious Sites: Reviews suggest the sites are well-spaced, contributing to the overall sense of peace and privacy. Campers have found specific sites, like "lucky #7," to be particularly enjoyable.
- Convenient Access to Helena Amenities: Being located in Helena means easy and quick access to a wide array of gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, and other city services.

For Montanans, the Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground offers an incredibly practical and enjoyable camping option right in the heart of our state's capital. We understand the allure of remote wilderness camping, but sometimes, convenience and comfort are paramount, especially for a weekend getaway or a stop during a longer journey across Montana. This campground strikes that perfect balance.
The electric-only hookups cater perfectly to RVers, a popular way to explore our vast landscapes, ensuring a comfortable stay without needing full services at every stop. The availability of water for tank fills and nearby dump stations addresses the practical needs of RV travel. What truly makes it stand out for locals, however, is the genuine "campground with vault toilets" feel, rather than just a paved parking lot, combined with those "great views of the surrounding mountains" and the delightful surprise of "deer in camp every night." These small touches elevate it from a utilitarian stop to a truly pleasant mini-retreat.

Customer Reviews
I stay at a lot of fairgrounds campgrounds and this one is an actual campground with vault toilets rather than a parking lot like most. It is set back from the rest of the grounds. Great views of the surrounding mountains. It is electric only but they have water available to fill up before parking. No dump station here either. There is a playground about 1/4 mile from the campground. There are gas stations nearby that have RV dump stations.
We loved staying here, we had deer in camp every night. It was quiet and peaceful. The only thing was the grass could have been cut. We had lucky #7 it was great.
I got a kidd who needs electric hookups for their medical condition. I've been calling for about a month now an I can't get a hold of anyone I need help please
Do you guys by chance rent spaces out by the month? If so how much for a 32ft 5th wheel a guy and his dog?
This place is a simple campground, with simple reservations. Bring your own water, but the sites have electricity and there are a variety of lengths for different RV sizes. I like it because it's close to where I work - and camping once a week is cheaper than a motel. No trees, no clubhouse, no creek, etc, but there is a state park and shopping nearby.
