Little Isabella River Campground Introduce
🌲 Embrace the Northwoods at **Little Isabella River Campground** in Isabella, Minnesota! 🛶
For Minnesotans seeking a truly rugged and authentic Northwoods camping experience without giving up all basic amenities, the Little Isabella River Campground is an excellent choice. Located deep within the **Superior National Forest**, this small, secluded, fee-based campground is the perfect base for anglers, trail riders, and anyone who cherishes the quiet solitude of the forest. The campground is nestled in a beautiful grove of **towering red and white pines**, with the gentle flow of the namesake river (which visitors note is more like a creek here) providing a relaxing natural soundtrack day and night.
As one satisfied camper advised, keep in mind this is a **primitive camp site with vault toilets**, meaning you are embracing the wilderness. Its location truly puts you at the center of the action—or, rather, the center of nature—being **"about an hour away from just about anything in every direction."** This is precisely the appeal for those who want to escape the crowds and the hustle of more developed areas like the North Shore resorts. It's an **inexpensive stop over for a night or two**, or a launchpad for extended wilderness adventures.
However, you must be prepared for the wildlife—and the insects! Bring your bug spray, and as the reviews clearly state, be "bear aware." The presence of **bear proof garbage cans** and local wildlife (a large bear wandering by at night is a possibility!) confirms the deep-woods location and the need for safe food storage.

## ✨ Features and Highlights
The campground is defined by its natural setting and the access it provides to the unique recreational activities of the Superior National Forest.
- **Brook Trout Fishing:** The **Little Isabella River** (a small Class 2 trout stream) is a primary draw. It is known as a popular spot for **brook trout fishing**, providing anglers with a quiet, secluded place to cast a line right next to the camp.
 - **OHV/ATV Trail Access:** A key feature is the access to the local OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) trail network. A portion of the campground—generally four sites—is designated as an **ATV camping area**, making it an excellent base camp for trail riders. The remainder of the campground (the west side) is non-motorized and tends to be quieter.
 - **Private, Wooded Sites:** The sites are situated in a grove of majestic red and white pines, offering good privacy and being **close to the water** for picturesque views and a relaxing atmosphere. Sites like #8 and #11 are noted by locals as being the most desirable, though some sites can be uneven.
 - **Wildlife Viewing:** The remote location ensures ample opportunities for **wildlife watching**, including deer, moose, and various birds, and the mandatory vigilance regarding bears adds an element of authentic wilderness adventure.
 - **Proximity to Wilderness:** Located adjacent to the vast Superior National Forest, providing numerous opportunities for **hiking, canoeing/kayaking** on nearby lakes, and **hunting** in season. The site is a great jump-off point for exploring the broader region.

Customer Reviews
Been a great camping experience. This is a primitive camp site with vault toilets so keep that in mind when coming out here, you're about an hour away from just about anything in every direction. The campground also has bear proof garbage cans near vault toilets, the river was fun to check out on a short walk ( little Isabella river is more of creek by the camp ) the flowing water near our camp was relaxing to listen to day and night. Mosquitoes are thick as well as gnats. Fire rings are nice with movable grates.
Site 8 is the nicest camping spot here. Site 11 is nice. The rest of the sites are extremely uneven. Pit toilets were clean. Water available at entrance. It has an OHV trail, and that is it for things to do here. For the most part, quite atmosphere. Inexpensive stop over for a night or two.
This campground was practically empty while others near were booked full. Plenty of privacy. The spaces were average in size, enough space for an SUV and a tent, however they were overgrown and needed maintenance with mowing and dead branch removal. The pit toilet area was clean with few insects - not an easy task. Would return. Best place ever if you want to see the night sky in all its glory without any ambient light.
With only about 15 sites and no fancy amenities, this is a pretty quiet spot to rest for a night while passing through the area. Site 11 is a prime spot due to location, access and layout. Most sites will require some leveling work if you're in an RV, depending on the size of your rig, but they aren't terribly off-kilter. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There are vault toilets and we'll water available. Cell service was very good on T-Mobile and Verizon. Be prepared for mosquitoes and deer flies (in July anyway).
Only 4 ATV friendly sites. 2 of those sites had long term campers parked in them. - no one there. The other two were either very narrow or small. The trail runs from the campground - there should be more ATV friendly sites! Beautiful area though.
