Spent one night backcountry camping in late March; cool weather but no bugs! Easy to obtain permit and NPS website is accurate / up to date. The campsite as of March 2019 had a portable toilet. Dunes block some of the coastal winds but we would still recommend bringing commercially made sand stakes or sealable plastic bags to fill with water to ensure your tent stays staked.
I recommend this campground to anyone who is in assateague I went in October and it was surprisingly warm.
Get away from people.
